About the Position: This position is located at the Directorate of Resource Management, Special Assistants at Naval Medical Center San Diego CA. The incumbent serves as a Safety and Occupational Health (SOH) Specialist in a Bureau of Medicine & Surgery Military Treatment Facility. Responsible for assisting the SOH Manager in planning, organizing, establishing, implementing, administering, and evaluating a SOH program covering medical, dental, and medical support facilities.

Duties

Conducts safety and occupational health inspections for the medical, dental, and medical support facilities. Works closely with Occupational Health Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health, Facility Management, Patient Safety and organizational leaders to identify, abate or mitigate accidents Proactively analyzes potential hazards, determines critical factors that occur prior to mishap, and recommends alternative work processes or procedures to eliminate or minimize the potential for injuries and illnesses. Responsible for the implementation of SOH programs based on established national safety standards, including other applicable laws, rules, and regulations Oversees and provides guidance on educational programs related to safety for MTF Staff and other support activities on Navy Safety and JTC EC issues.

• This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.

• This position has a requirement to lift up to 25lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
• This position requires the incumbent to work on any day or shift, including night, weekends, holidays, or on an “on call” basis, necessary to meet mission requirements.

OR Education: Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree with a major study in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.
