Duties

As a Visual Information Specialist you will: Research, plan, and recommend original visual treatments for web, social media, printed publications, exhibits, or the visual content of oral presentations, and other communication media when the subject matter is novel, unique, abstract in nature, or has a multiplicity of themes. Apply advanced knowledge of visual design principles. Meet with clients (e.g. author, editor, or program official) to develop a mutual understanding of the information objectives of the project, any points to be emphasized, and the relative degree of importance of various pieces of the information to be disseminated. Perform extensive research of the subject by discussing the subject matter with groups or individuals (program staff, other CDC Staff, other agency staff, state officials, etc.) contributing to or familiar with the substance of the project, reading technical journals for potential treatment method ideas, reading medical journals, texts, or other information relative to the subject matter, etc. Advise on the technical advantages and disadvantages of various formats, styles, media, and methods of reproduction, suggesting those that will best meet the information objectives of each project. Identify need for changes in priorities and takes action to implement changes; coordinate plans and schedule with staff, clients, and organization managers as appropriate to assess the quality of the products, client satisfaction and maximize visual communication effectiveness.

Qualifications

All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement. Minimum Qualifications: To qualify at the GS-13 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level, which must include the following experience: translating ideas and information into visual products or new production processes and using industry-standard software to produce visual communication for digital and/or traditional mediums (i.e., web, social media, mobile design, and print). Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

Copy of your transcripts or equivalent documentation is required for positions with an education requirement, or if you are qualifying based on education or a combination of education and experience. An official transcript will be required if you are selected.

College or university degree generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. For a list of schools which meet these criteria, please refer to Department of Education Accreditation page.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program.
