You will serve as a PHYSICAL SCIENTIST, GEOPHYSICIST, or OCEANOGRAPHER in the MARITIME HOMELAND DEFENSE SUPPORT DIVISION, MINE WARFARE DEPARTMENT of NAVOCEANO BAY ST LOUIS.
Duties
You will lead in the development and maintenance of Mine Warfare (MIW) environmental databases pertaining to ports and harbors in support of homeland defense.
You will receive, process, and perform image generation, mosaicking, bottom contact and roughness analysis of sonar imagery data collected aboard NAVOCEANO ships and MIW Fleet assets, and from outside sources.
You will investigate and implement new techniques for automated data analysis of geophysical data sets and expertly utilize Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to perform geophysical data processing.
You will perform field duties aboard NAVOCEANO survey platforms, aircrafts, or at remote shore locations as required, and serves as a trained senior member of the survey teams.
You will be responsible for collection, processing, analysis and quality control of various acoustic and related geophysical data.
You will resolve most conflicts which arise, coordinate the work with others as necessary, and interpret policies on own initiative in terms of established objectives.

- This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

Qualifications
In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
Experience and professional knowledge in ancillary fields such as bathymetry, geology, and navigation in order to interpret and resolve erroneous or conflicting data.
Experience applying a wide latitude and independent judgment to develop new methods and techniques for analyzing and databasing marine environmental data.

- Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

- Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Degree: major study of at least 24 semester hours in oceanography or a related discipline such as physics, meteorology, geophysics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, geology, or biology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of oceanography, physics, geophysics, chemistry, mathematics, meteorology, computer science, and engineering sciences.

Applicants who qualify on the basis of major study in biology or geology must have had at least 6 semester hours in the major directly concerned with marine science or 6 semester hours in oceanography; applicants who qualify on the basis of other physical sciences or engineering must have had differential and integral calculus and at least 6 semester hours in physics.
