About the Position: This position falls under the Defense Health Agency (DHA) at Camp LeJeune in Onslow, North Carolina.
Duties
A HIPAA Privacy Compliance Specialist is responsible for ensuring the facility complies with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations regarding patient information privacy and security.
Develop and implement privacy policies and procedures, conduct regular privacy assessments and audits, provide staff training on HIPAA regulations.
Investigate privacy breaches or complaints and ensuring that the organization remains in compliance with all HIPAA requirements. to include Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) privacy related issues.
Serves as the local HIPAA/FOIA subject matter expert for investigations.
Monitors all health-related agreements with other similar internal DHA organizations to ensure all privacy concerns, requirements and responsibilities are addressed.
They also play a key role in developing and maintaining a culture of privacy and security within the organization and capable of generating detailed reports/responses to all matters related to HIPAA privacy compliance.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 1 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
- This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
- Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: Assisting in monitoring compliance with Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act (HIPAA) requirements;- Develops local policies and procedures as needed from DoD and DHA HIPAA/FOIA privacy requirements; and, identifies, implements and manages the maintenance of the organization's health information privacy policies and procedures; Implements mechanisms to receive, document, track and investigate all complaints and actions taken related to privacy policies or procedural issues; Oversees the destruction of sensitive information as defined by HIPAA/FOIA guidance when the information is no longer required for operational or archival purposes; and Tracks medical information released outside the organization to individuals, agencies or other organizations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
