Position is in Health Promotions/Disease Prevention Branch with Division of Community Health Service at Northern Navajo Medical Center, Shiprock, NM. The purpose of this position is to provide a variety of complex support duties associated with patient care, treatment, and prevention in response to the full scope of health issues facing patients, families, and communities, including chronic and communicable diseases as well as other duties related to promotion of health and wellness.
Duties
Responsible for gathering, entering, and reporting of epidemiologic data for Shiprock Service Unit patients, families and communities including communicable, acute, and chronic illnesses, as well as injuries and occupational hazards.
Gathers individual and population health data from a variety of sources and systems including a variety of electronic records, community surveys, and interviews with patients and community members.
Enters data into a variety of record systems including local databases as well as Service Unit, State, and National data tracking portals.
Assists with other assigned personnel to determine the source of any significant increase in the baseline presence of infectious diseases.
Assists and prepares appropriate database questionnaires.
Collects specimens as instructed by the investigating officer or designee. Employs a working knowledge of statistics.
Reviews confirmed laboratory test results and interviews based upon results that indicate infection and reviews findings with the primary investigating officer. Provides laboratory test results and health education to individual patients in a confidential manner.
Applies knowledge of communicable diseases to inform clients about preventive measures.
Participates in emergency preparedness, bio- terror, or other mass casualty activities.
Assists with phone calls to patients and their contacts including preliminary education calls prior to test results being available, calls to patients with negative results, calls to patients with positive results, and calls to contacts of positive patients.
Assists to gather additional data on case investigation, case management, and contact tracing services from electronic health record systems.
Assists with delivery of community preventive services.
Performs other Duties as assigned
Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):
Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.

Education and Training
For GS-4: Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in subjects related to the position.
For GS-5: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position.
In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
GS: 4: 6 months of general experience AND 6 months of specialized experience and/or 2 years above high school education. Specialized Experience: Examples Include: enter and retrieve individual health data from electronic health systems; phone calls to patients and their contacts with results; experience with community preventive services including, activity promotions; printing, copying, and distribution of survey tools and data collection; data entry and reporting.
GS-5: 1 year of specialized experience at the GS-04 level and/or 4 years above high school leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position, specialized experience includes: Examples Include: Communicates test results and health education to patients confidentially; phone calls to patients; delivers community preventive services including physical activity promotions; gather and report rates of immunizations, illnesses, and preventive health services; conduct health care guidance in the area of contagious diseases; conducts contact tracing, and behavior interviews; initial compilation, analysis, and reporting of data
GS-6: 1 year of specialized experience at the GS-05 level, specialized experience includes: Examples Include: gathers individual and population health data; participates in response to public health issues, outbreaks, and investigations; plans and delivers community preventive services; design, test and revise survey tools; compilation, analysis, and reporting of epidemiologic data; develops and adapts computer data entry systems; collects volume and quality data measures for health services provided to patients, families, and communities
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
