The primary purpose of this position is to assist the Fitness Director and Assistant Director in the planning, managing, and administering Kirtland AFB's fitness and sports program which involves but not limited to, special events, athletic competitions, physical fitness training, equipment inspections/inventories, marketing, budgets, program reservations, safety, and a broad staff-training program.

Duties

Responsible for administrative duties associated with development and implementation of base intramural and varsity programs, as well as other fitness programs. Provide training when necessary. Employee will be driving on occasion a privately-owned (POV) and/or government-owned vehicle (GOV) to various locations within Kirtland AFB to complete duties. Contribute to the preparation of the statement of work for sports officials and aerobic officials as applicable. Plan and budget for equipment and supplies required for conducting fitness programs.

  • Travel and relocation expenses will not be paid
  • May occasionally be required to work other than normal duty hours and/or shift work may be required which may include overtime and/or irregular hours.
  • This position is subject to provisions of the DoD Priority Placement Program
  • Work may occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft/vehicle to conferences, meetings, or functions away from the duty office/location. Travel may include overnight stays.
  • Work requires the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver’s license is required for the position.
  • Must meet and maintain training requirements as outlined in applicable Department of Defense (DoD) and Air Force regulations.
  • Certificate in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation is required.
  • Disclosure of Political Appointments is required

  • Must have a primary fitness certification (American College of Sports Medicine, National Strength and Conditioning Association, National Academy of Sports Medicine, National Exercise Trainers Association or similar recommended).

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Individual Occupational Requirements for 0188 and Group Standard for Administrative & Management Positions SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-6 level (or other equivalent pay systems) in federal service which equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position being filled. Specialized experience is experience which involves planning, organizing, coordinating, or evaluating community, industrial, outdoor, institutional, or other recreational programs; planning, establishing, or evaluating a recreational curriculum for junior college or higher academic levels; instructing in the principles and techniques of recreational program planning and management and serving in a leadership role in the programs and activities of local, regional, and/or national recreational organizations. OR EDUCATION: One full year of graduate education in a major study which includes general recreation or one of the appropriate fields of recreation such as outdoor recreation; recreation and parks leadership; wild land recreation management; natural resources recreation; youth recreation; public, urban, or community recreation; special populations recreation (e.g., senior citizens, institutional, etc.); or physical education. NOTE: YOU MUST SUBMIT A COPY OF YOUR TRANSCRIPT. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100 percent. To combine education and experience, determine the total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level. Then determine the education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level. Finally, add the two percentages. Knowledge of mission and function of a fitness program to competently and independently execute continuing fitness projects or programs through the proper application of the principles, concepts and techniques of fitness programs. 2. Knowledge of the range of activities and services, of participant interests and needs, and of the methods and processes that enable the employee to plan and conduct a variety of fitness activities. 3. Ability to meet and communicate effectively with people in a patron service environment to achieve the goals of a fitness program and to train patrons in large groups and/or brief groups from a wide variety of backgrounds. 4. Ability to read, interpret and apply policies and directives. 5. Skill and ability to effectively manage the financial and equipment resources received and provide for the fitness program area. 6. Ability to change program requirements within available resources and the ability to establish program objectives or performance goals and assess progress toward their achievement and analyze and evaluate the needs and interests of customers. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
