The primary purpose of this position is to assist the Fitness Director and Assistant Director in the planning, managing, and administering Kirtland AFB's fitness and sports program.

Duties

Responsible for administrative duties associated with development and implementation of base intramural and varsity programs, as well as other fitness programs. Interfaces with contracted official's organizations and acts as coordinator between the official's organization and the Fitness management. Plans and budgets for equipment and supplies required for conducting fitness programs. Functions as the Fitness program point of contact for all intramural and varsity coaches. Establishes coaches meeting prior to each sport explaining rules and requirements for participation within the base sports program. Functions as a certified personal trainer providing instruction on various strength and cardiovascular equipment. Assures cleanliness and safety of gymnasium facilities. Works with Base CE to insure safe and proper conditions exist in the facility and on sport fields.

  • Work may occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft/vehicle to conferences, meetings, or functions away from the duty office/location. Travel may include overnight stays
  • The work requires the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver’s license is required for the position.
  • Certificate in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation is required
  • Must have an Air Force approved primary fitness certification (American College of Sports Medicine, National Strength and Conditioning Association, National Academy of Sports Medicine, National Exercise Trainers Association or similar recommended)

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Administrative and Management Positions, GS-0188 series. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-05, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes experience which may have been gained while planning, organizing, coordinating, supervising, or evaluating community, industrial, outdoor, institutional, or other recreational programs; planning, establishing, or evaluating a recreational curriculum for junior college or higher academic levels; instructing in the principles and techniques of recreational program planning and management and serving in a leadership role in the programs and activities of local, regional, and/or national recreational organizations. OR EDUCATION: Applicants must have successful completion1 full year of graduate level education or superior academic achievement in general recreation, or one of the appropriate fields of recreation such as outdoor recreation; recreation and parks leadership; wild land recreation management; natural resources recreation; youth recreation; public, urban, or community recreation; special populations recreation (e.g., senior citizens, institutional, etc.); or physical education. (must provide copy of transcripts). OR COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: Applicants must have a combination of qualifying specialized experience and education that when combined total at least 100 percent (must provide copy of transcripts). FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in­-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-05 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-07 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of mission and function of the Fitness Programs to competently and independently execute continuing fitness projects or programs through the proper application of the principles, concepts and techniques of fitness programs. Knowledge of the range of activities and services, of participant interests and needs, and of the methods and processes that enable the employee to plan and conduct a variety of fitness activities. 2. Ability to meet and communicate effectively with people in a patron service environment to achieve the goals of the Fitness Program. Ability to read, interpret and apply DoD, Air Force, Command, and local policies and directives. 3. Skills and ability to effectively manage the financial and equipment resources received and provided for the fitness program area. 4. Ability to change program requirements within available resources and the ability to establish program objectives or performance goals and assess progress toward their achievement. Ability to analyze and evaluate the needs and interests of customers. 5. Knowledge of automation sufficient to support required program functions. 6. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to train patrons in large groups and/or brief groups from a wide variety of backgrounds. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
