This position is located in the administrative offices of the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service Line (PLMS) at the Atlanta VA Medical Center. The incumbent is responsible for properly extracting and transcribing pathology reports to generate final patient diagnoses within the PLMS service area. The incumbent will be the primary point of contact for timeliness of pathology and diagnostic reports.
Duties
Major duties include but are not limited to:
Performs transcription; extracting and transcribing pathology report to generate final patient diagnosis within the P&LM service area.
Performs appropriate crosschecking and monitors quality control systems to ensure quality pathology diagnosis and reporting
Reconcile list of pending pathology for diagnostic specimens that are sent to reference laboratories to ensure that all results are received and reported.
Receives, accessions and labels specimens received in the pathology laboratory including requests for autopsies
Notifies appropriate clinic, unit or other facilities about duplicate orders, inappropriate orders and problem samples, slides or blocks. Submits written report of all noted discrepancies.
Follow laboratory procedures for collecting specimens in the appropriate container, maintains specimen under appropriate conditions, following guidelines for collecting timed specimens, blood cultures and compatibility (cross-matches).
Logs telephone requests for tests, ensuring proper orders are obtained and final and gross descriptions are documented according to the urgency or specific time indicated.
Electronically transcribe laboratory tests result received from multiple VA and Commercial reference labs through the laboratory information system; and ensuring that documents are scanned into patient record
Complies with all Medical Center policies and procedures regarding safety practices.
Performs timekeeping functions
Maintains adequate lab supplies ensuring work area is adequately stocked.

Qualifications

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Capturing, coding, and transcribing pathology reports; accessioning; tracking patient diagnoses; preparing and maintaining charts; scanning and archiving slides and reports; answering phones and providing clerical support in a laboratory setting. Note: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week.

Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed post-high school education (beyond the second year) and specialized experience as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. Physical Requirements: The work is often sedentary but there is occasional walking to various locations in the laboratory and medical facility, standing for prolonged periods of time, bending, and reaching while filing and carrying light medical and office supplies, medical records and files. This position also requires frequent use of the hand-held telephone while accessing different computer systems or while writing.
