Duties
Serve as the site safety and health officer as well as focal point supporting field sites to ensure all safety and occupational health standards are met in preparing for and during operations.
Perform periodic and unscheduled inspections of chemical and emerging threat laboratories along with chemical and emerging threat operations and test facilities to evaluate compliance with applicable regulations.
Investigates mishaps using hazard analysis and other analytical techniques to identify and control unsafe acts and hazardous conditions.
Presents, justifies, negotiates, tracks intelligence information, and defends projects and/or program segments
Perform periodic and unscheduled inspections of chemical and emerging threat laboratories and recommend measures and methods to correct safety deficiencies.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- You must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 20% of the time.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and special experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement for CHEMIST:
A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in the physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.
OR
B. Combination of Education and Experience: Course work equivalent to a major in the physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) experience in chemical sciences to develop and analyze emerging threats, chemical and analysis techniques; 2) navigating complex occupational health problems in the chemical warfare agent and biological defense arenas and 3) experience in devising a variety of control measures, including one or more of the following: ventilation, shielding, material substitution, and change in work procedures, isolation, education, devices, and the management of waste materials to evaluate proposed new works processes and/or materials; and recommend measures to minimize health hazards. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
