Duties
This position is located in the Alexandria Office of the United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Virginia (USAO), in the Criminal Division.
If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for the overall supervision and coordination of the Paralegals and Legal Administrative Specialists in the Criminal Division (Alexandria Criminal Division). The incumbent also provides substantive legal support to AUSAs in specialized litigative activities.
Typical work assignments will include:
Providing assistance to attorneys in trial preparation by compiling trial notebooks, assembling jury instructions and preparing witness exhibits list.
Managing the support staff to timely provide high-quality services.
Planning the work of the staff to ensure that work product meets organizational goals and priorities, consistent with applicable guidelines and policies.
Monitoring individual staff performance and taking action to promote optimum staff effectiveness.
Ensuring that performance ratings are timely and accurately completed.
Collecting, organizing, processing and producing documents, electronic files and other materials required for criminal discovery.
Monitoring and distributing workload among paralegal and legal administrative specialist staff.
Requirements
- You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
- Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
- You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
- If selected, you may be required to complete a one year probationary period.
- If selected, you will be subject to the satisfactory completion of a one year supervisory or managerial probationary period unless this requirement has been met previously.
- Time-in-Grade: Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement.
- You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement and before placement in the position.
Qualifications
To be qualified for the GS-12 position, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in federal service.
Specialized Experience for GS-12: I have at least one year of full-time specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in Federal service performing paralegal or legal work which demonstrates a basic knowledge of legal research and ability to interpret legal decisions. My qualifying experience involves: working in a legal office performing paralegal work such as: tracking and litigation support; preparing legal documents such as reports, briefs, memorandum and statistical analyses used in litigation cases; and conducting legal research and applying various laws, decisions, interpretation, rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
