About the Position: This position is located at DPTMS, Range Control Branch at Fort Leonard Wood. Fort Leonard Wood is located in the beautiful South-Central Missouri Ozarks. The Fort covers more than 61,000 acres and is located in Pulaski County, Missouri. Bordering the installation to the North are the towns of Waynesville/St. Robert and Interstate 44. St. Louis is a 2 hour drive to the East along I-44 and Springfield is a little more than an hour's drive to the West of Fort Leonard Wood.

Duties

Serve as a Range Technician on heavily used live-fire ranges and training areas for the Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization, and Security (DPTMS), Range Operations. Responsible for the safe and coordinated use of the Fort Leonard Wood Range and Training Area Complex working on a rotational shift basis. Perform physical security checks of the facilities within the range and training area complex. Ensure strict compliance with environmental regulations to include providing instructions for thorough policing of all ammunition, brass, debris, trash, residue by using units. Perform maintenance of ranges and training areas to correct minor discrepancies to include replacement of sandbags, vegetation control, transport. Supervision of troop details, and policing of ranges and training areas, brush removal, and tree removal.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Incumbent must obtain and maintain a US government motor vehicle operator's identification card (OF 346) within 30 days after hire.
  • This position is covered by the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Program. Incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 5019-R and must pass urinalysis testing as required prior to appointment and periodically thereafter.
  • Incumbent must obtain and maintain equipment operator's qualification record (DA 348) within 30 days after hire.
  • Incumbent is subject to an irregular tour of duty to cover 24 hour-a-day (must be able to work on rotating shifts), 7 days per week operation, to include holidays.
  • The employee may be required to work overtime to include weekends and federal holidays, out of cycle, or unscheduled training or on an emergency basis.
  • Incumbent is subject to a medical clearance examination prior to employment. This position may require an annual physical or medical surveillance examination.
  • This position requires the employee drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver's license is required and must be maintained for the position.
  • May be required to assume essential personnel status during inclement weather/emergencies.
  • Incumbent must successfully complete vehicle training to include use of emergency lights, 4x4 operation, and situational vehicle operations provided by US Army within 30 days after hire and complete semi-annual vehicle refresher training.
  • This position is subject to the Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968 which makes it a felony for anyone who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence to ship, transport, possess, or receive firearms or ammunition.
  • The duties of the position require Temporary Duty Travel (TDY) approximately 5% of the duty time.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes:1) preparing range and training facility preventive maintenance reports; 2) providing continuous application of safety inspections of ranges; 3) ensuring accident scenes are protected until appropriate investigations have been completed; 4) performing physical security checks of the ranges/facilities within the range operations complex; and 5) operating a computer on automated ranges and maneuver live fire ranges. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: AdaptabilityClericalCustomer Service (Clerical/Technical)Firearms Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06).
