You will serve as a ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN (NUCLEAR) in the Nuclear Engineering and Planning Department , Nuclear Quality Division (Code 2350) of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will prepare engineering reports and briefs on test and evaluation processes and results. You will analyze operating problems and recommend changes to correct deficiencies. You will develop reports and present findings as they relate to day-to-day operations. You will maintain radiation safety in accordance with standard operating procedures.

  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a U.S. Passport.
  • You must be able to work occasional overtime in support of the Division's Mission.

Qualifications

GS-12: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of SPECIALIZED experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience providing technical expertise in the field of Nuclear Systems including a practical knowledge of construction, application, properties, operations, limitations, processes, machinery, devises and materials associated with the systems. Experience with Naval Nuclear complex administration, technical procedures and quality controls requirements that govern all phases of nuclear reactor plant work. Experience with the shipyard's radiological controls and the shipyard Nuclear Power Manual Chapters which provide controls and guidelines for the Nuclear Quality Division. Experience with independent practical judgement and knowledge of the concepts, principles, techniques and practices of quality engineering or radiological engineering principles as they pertain to nuclear reactor plant systems. Experience demonstrating knowledge of both the Nuclear Engineering and Planning Department & Radiological Controls Division directives and NAVSEA policies pertinent to the work. Experience gathering, collating, evaluating and analyzing quality and performance data, developing technical reports and recommendations to resolve quality problems to eliminate the basic cause for poor quality and improve quality performance. GS-11: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of SPECIALIZED experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience planning and conducting quality engineering audits or evaluations of nuclear reactor plant work procedures (e.g., overhaul and repair of Naval Nuclear Propulsion Plant components). Experience identifying and resolving deficiencies and recommending changes to technical documents, specifications and instructions. Experience utilizing expert knowledge of reactor plant materials, metallurgy, reactor physics, heat related to the overhaul, repair, testing of nuclear fluid and mechanical components to complete required technical tasks. Experience communicating orally and in writing, along with the ability to analyze the applicability of new developments and new technical approaches and procedures to nuclear and radiological controls requirements.
