You will serve as a Supervisory Engineering Technician (Nuclear) in the Nuclear Engineering and Planning Department (2300) of the Nuclear Test Engineering Division (2340) in the Chief Test Engineer Branch (2340.1) of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.
Duties
You will manage, plan, and execute the reactor plant test program for a specific nuclear ship.
You will serve as a technical advisor and expert to the Nuclear Engineering and Planning Manager concerning matters of reactor plant safety and testing of nuclear reactor plants.
You will exercise control of all work performed by the shipyard on the nuclear propulsion plant.
You will train engineers to enable them to pass written and oral examinations given by the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) and the shipyard in order to qualify as Shift Test Engineers (STE) for the specific reactor plant type.
You will ensure that the reactor plant is operated only in accordance with approved operating procedures, test procedures, or technical manual requirements.
You will perform technical planning functions with the objective of preparing the shipyard for the capability of complete overhaul, refueling and repair of reactor plants for nuclear powered vessels.
You will act as the shipyard representative and chairman of the Joint Test Group. The Test Group is responsible for maintaining the reactor plant in a safe condition at all times.
You will provide administrative and technical supervision for approximately 10-25 Nuclear Engineers/technicians.

- Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
- This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

Qualifications
Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of Specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
Experience in applying advanced theoretical and practical expert knowledge of overall new developments in the field of Naval nuclear propulsion plants.
Experience applying detailed knowledge of reactor plant operations, water chemistry control, radiological control, and radiological work practices, and shipyard administrative procedures to be followed during the course of an overhaul or refueling.
Experience developing innovative approaches and resolutions to problems and situations encountered.
Experience as a qualified Shift Test Engineer in accordance with NAVSEA 0989-028-5000, Manual for the Control of Testing and Plant Conditions.
Experience utilizing knowledge of related scientific principles, particularly those of higher mathematics and physical and engineering sciences.
Experience utilizing knowledge of the fundamental engineering concepts and terminology, the units of measurement and their interrelationship to all branches of engineering.
