You will serve as a ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN in the WELDING and NDT ENGINEERING DIVISION, QUALITY ASSURANCE OFFICE of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will be responsible for establishing and maintaining technical control of welding and related metal joining processes on one or more projects. You will be responsible for the overall training and qualification of welders and brazers who perform work for Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. You will develop welder/brazer qualification instructions, and testing procedures of welding/brazing electrodes in support of Shipyard and NAVCIP stock system supply. You will test results assuring required inspections and supporting data are complete. You will accept and or reject material based on test results.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of Specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: * Experience working with welding engineering principles, welder and welding procedure qualifications, and weld consumable specifications. * Experience with welding engineering and other metal joining processes. * Experience welding, brazing, and non-destructive testing inspections of welding/brazing. * Experience applying a wide range of specialized methods, principles, and techniques to investigate reasons for the failure of welded/brazed qualification assembles. * Experience reviewing qualification reports for causes of failure such as improper heat input, torch angle, surface preparation, etc. Additional qualification information can be found from the following Office of Personnel Management website: https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/classification-qualifications/general-schedule-qualification-standards/#url=List-by-Occupational-Series https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/classification-qualifications/general-schedule-qualification-standards/0800/engineering-technical-series-0802/ Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social).
