About the Position: Develops procedures to ensure critical safety programs following the Department of Defense (DoD) and Department of the Army (DA) requirements. Conducts regular surveys and inspections of aviation operations, facilities, and equipment including aviation, ground and industrial safety functions directly related to flight, ground, and hangar safety to ensure compliance with established occupational safety standards and requirements, which may involve in-flight surveillance.
Duties
Set priorities, prepares schedules, and completes inspections using the Assessment, Inspection and Surveys module of the Army Safety Management Information System (ASMIS) 2.0.
Conduct formal inspections of all facilities to include writing the final report and debriefing the applicable commanders.
Assist organizations in accident investigations and reporting procedures by visiting the accident scene when required.
Provide advice on current regulatory guidance for aviation operations, influencing substantive program changes or alternative new courses of aviation and ground safety action.
Assist in organizing, development, and the conduct of the occupational safety and health program for TAAB, Davison Army Airfield, and subordinate units.
Plan, design, and carry out aviation and ground safety training programs to Brigade and subordinate unit personnel.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain the Professional Certificate in SOH outlined in the 0018-job series Master Training Plan and/or awarded the Professional Certificate in SOH within 12 months of assignment to the position.
- Pre-employment and annual physical required to include pulmonary testing.
- Use of protective clothing and gear may be required.
- Position may require employee to work under adverse environmental conditions.
- Must possess a valid state driver's license. Must obtain and maintain a valid government driver's license.
- May be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or on-call duty hours.

Basic Requirement:Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study -- safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology.

Specialized Experience: Experience managing safety or occupational health program elements while applying safety and occupational health laws, regulations, principles, theories, practices, and procedures. Develop programs, policies and safety education to reduce the frequency, severity, and cost of accidents, occupational illnesses, and potential hazards.-

Certificates: Certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or Certified Health Physicist (CHP), or similar certification that included successful completion of a written examination meets the requirements for GS-5. Applicants may also qualify for higher grade levels based on their education and/or experience.

GS-13 Required Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: demonstrating: management of safety or occupational health programs an organization to develop and/or implementation of safety programs, policies, education and/or strategic safety goals. Application of safety and/or occupational health laws and principles collaboration with high-level managers to reduce injuries and illnesses. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12).

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-12). Applicants must meet all eligibility requirements and minimum qualification requirements prescribed by OPM within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
