The selectee for this position will serve as a INTERDISCIPLINARY PHYSICAL SCIENTIST/ OCEANOGRAPHER/ COMPUTER SCIENTIST in the REMOTE SENSING BRANCH (NP321) NAVOCEANO BAY ST LOUIS.

Duties

You will coordinate, develop and regulate a variety of projects/programs that are in the direct support of the Division Functions. You will conceptualize, develop, implement and document new or enhancements to existing real time oceanographic processing, especially remotely sensed data and in-situ processing. You will ensure that Branch products meet operation accuracy, coverage and timeliness requirements. You will prepare planning documents and administrative studies in support of the transition of oceanographic processing capabilities, data , and products to the operational environment. You will develop plan and implement procedures to assimilate different types of data into integrated products.

• You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
• This is a bargaining unit position.

Qualifications

For GS-13: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience with the concepts, theories, principles, and practices of oceanography, computer science, remote sensing data or other physical science. Experience in oceanographic data acquisition, data processing and data exchange. Experience in the handling of large amounts of complex data by computer. Experience interfacing with internal and external representatives in support of data collection, processing and data exchange requirements. Experience managing and/or coordinate a diverse and in-depth scientific project(s). Experience planning, managing, reviewing and assuming responsibility for project management functions of an organization in the fields of physical science, oceanographer or computer science data. Basic Requirements:

1. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

   or

2. Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Individual Occupational Requirements

Basic Requirements:

1. Degree: major study of at least 24 semester hours in oceanography or a related discipline such as physics, meteorology, geophysics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, geology, or biology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of oceanography, physics, geophysics, chemistry, mathematics, meteorology, computer science, and engineering sciences.

2. Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Applicants who qualify on the basis of major study in biology or geology must have had at least 6 semester hours in the major directly concerned with marine science or 6 semester hours in oceanography; applicants who qualify on the basis of other physical sciences or engineering must have had differential and integral calculus and at least 6 semester hours in physics.

Individual Occupational Requirements

Basic Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in computer science or bachelor's degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus. All academic degrees and course work must be from accredited or pre-accredited institutions.

Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the qualification requirements if the applicant can provide documentation indicating that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.
