Job opening: Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic Inspector

About the Position: The Anniston Army Depot is located in Anniston, Alabama in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountain chain halfway between Atlanta, GA and Birmingham, AL just off Interstate 20. The Depot is the largest employer in Calhoun County with approximately 4000 employees.

Duties

Conducts load and road tests inspections, troubleshooting locomotives and diagnosing malfunctions involving mechanical systems, and related electrical components. Serves as senior-level locomotive inspector engaged in depot-level, direct support, and general support maintenance. Overhaul, rebuild, repair, and test inspections of electrical systems, and related mechanical components of a wide range of types and sizes of railroad diesel-electric locomotives and locomotive cranes and diesel-electric power generating sets. Performs hazardous waste management duties and/or hazardous worker duties in permitted or regulated facilities. Performs preventive maintenance of all defense generator and rail systems. Participates as a member of a mobile maintenance team by engaging in the inspection, repair, overhaul, modification and testing of rail equipment mechanical systems.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain any associated license when they become available in regard to the position duties, IE Locomotive License.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position is covered by the civilian drug abuse testing program governed by AR 600-85, The Army Substance Abuse Program. Incumbent is subject to random drug testing.
  • Incumbent must obtain and maintain any applicable Motor Vehicle License(s) associated with position’s driving duties.
  • Incumbent must obtain and maintain an official government passport (Red) for OCONUS TDY/travel.
  • Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a Government Issued credit card for TDY/travel expenses.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 75% of the time.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • Required to perform the duties of a heavy mobile equipment inspector working on defense generator and rail systems in a deployed status at military installations and camps.

Time-limited promotions may be extended up to a maximum of five years. Time-limited reassignments and changes to lower grade may exceed five years, however return rights may be impacted. Position may be made permanent without further competition. Current Department of Army Civilian Employees Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic Inspector without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common duties of a Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic Inspector such as determining the serviceability of material using a variety of test and diagnostic equipment such as outside and inside micrometers, feeler gages, dial indicators, torque wrenches, pressure gages, tachometers, timing lights, engine analyzers, dynamometers, ammeter, ohmmeter, borescope, internal surface projectors, injector testers, ignition timers, and other instruments related to the trade. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To InspectAbility to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (Includes Blueprint Reading)Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and EquipmentKnowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, and Repair, etc.Technical Practices (Theoretical, Precise, Artistic)TroubleshootingUse of Measuring Instruments Physical Effort: Work involves standing, stooping and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts items weighing 15-45 pounds and occasionally is required to handle items of 45 pounds. Climbs ladders or reaches above head to work on defense generator and rail equipment. Required to drive and/or ride in a variety of transportation vehicles for extended periods of time. Working Conditions: Work is dirty and greasy and incumbent is subject to cuts and bruises from use of tools and equipment and working in close places. The work is performed in area where the noise is disagreeable, making it extremely difficult to talk and be able to hear and understand instructions. Incumbent is exposed to disagreeable smoke and fumes from exhaust of engines. Is required to wear safety shoes and use ear protection. A large percentage of work is required to be accomplished under field conditions.
