You will serve as a WOODCRAFTER in the Preservation Shop (Code 970), Production Resources Department Manager (Code 901), Production Resources Department (Code 900), of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will fabricate, repair, assemble and install aboard ship and/or in buildings, wooden articles such as cabinets, benches, models and mock-ups. You will mask and install temporary protective coverings on decks, bulkheads, equipment, battery wedges, cribbing, walking flats and support in submarine battery compartments. You will design, lay out, cut and install a variety of vinyl tile artistic inlays. You will design and fabricate mock-up, containments, and protective covers so specified atmospheric and cleanliness controls are met. You will receive work assignments from supervisors through work chits, job orders, plans blueprints sketches or orally. You will cut and install the above listed materials by using an assortment of fastening hardware and adhesives. You will set up, adjusts, and operates a wide variety of light to heavy, simple and complex, woodworking machinery in the milling and fabricating functions.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to lift/carry up to 50lbs.
  • You will be required to climb ladders and scaffolding.
  • You will be required to work in small and/or confined spaces

The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION Experience demonstrating extensive knowledge of the physical exterior and interior configurations relative to various submarines and surface ships. Fabricating, repairing, assembling, and installing aboard ship, nuclear vessels, and/or in buildings, wooden articles such as cabinets and cabinet type furniture, benches (both wooden and benelex), Formica fabrications, accommodation ladders, models, and mock-ups. Experience utilizing woodworking knowledge to lay out work and make templates in the woodcrafter trade aboard ships. Setting up and adjusting simple and complex machinery such as bandsaw, ripsaw, cut-off saw, ship angling saw, jointer, drill press, and similar tools. Experience interpreting blueprints, plans, sketches, manufacture's and military specifications and utilizing shop or trade mathematics which includes simple geometry. Selecting wood as to specified or suitable kind and production of wood finishes-and wood products, such as precision shaping, mortising, tenoning, doweling, turning, rabbiting, routing, and molding of irregular shaped parts.
