Duties
Position is located at National Institute of Standards and Technologies, Chief Office of Facilities and Property Management, Boulder Facilities
Maintenance Division.
The incumbent utilizes journeyman knowledge and skills in several trades and crafts to plan for materials, tools, and techniques needed, to
complete work with little or no supervision. All of the duties described by this position may not exist in each location. As a maintenance
mechanic the person in this position would perform a variety of tasks involved in the upkeep of buildings, grounds and related structures, fixtures,
and utilities. Major duties include Carpentry: Construct, alter, modify or repair a wide range of features in buildings and other facilities. The work
consists of constructing storage areas, workrooms, and offices within existing buildings including framework, rafters, joints, insulation, sheet rock,
paneling, doors, windows, cabinets, countertops, flooring, interior and exterior stairs, siding, roofing, as well as interior and exterior trim. Installs
floor coverings such as tile, linoleum, and carpet. Operates various carpentry equipment and tools such as routers, band and scroll saws, drill
presses, clippers, joiners, shapers, sanders, powered nail guns, etc., and is able to produce finished products with precise fit, accurate dimensions,
with an acceptable appearance. Performs painting duties with little oversight and/or review of work during progress or upon completion on a
variety of interior and exterior surfaces. Is able to apply various finishes such as the following: oil and water-based paint, varnishing, lacquers,
etc., be able to color match through tinting and toning of paint. Plumbing: Installs, modifies, and repairs new and existing utility supply, and
disposal systems and equipment such as sewage, water, oil, and gas distribution systems. The incumbent is able to connect pipe sections using
fittings, soldering, brazing, welding and other modern means. Is able to install traps, vents, drains, siphons, pumps integral to plumbing system,
meters, fittings, couplings, shock arrestors, and other fittings to pipe sections. Determines condition of connections and makes repairs or
corrections and/or adjusts connections and pipe circuitry to correct such conditions as air lock, water hammer, expansion, contraction and
friction. Electrical: Repairs or replaces electrical outlets, switches, switch plates, fuses and bulbs. Troubleshoots, locates, and makes basic repairs
of electrical wiring/controls/equipment/fixtures and electrical systems in facilities. Assists with site snow removal during winter operations which
can include operating snow blowers, plows, heavy equipment and shovels to clear site walkways, parking lots and building entrances. Snow
removal duties can be assigned out of hours or during normal business hours as the weather events occur.

Qualifications
There is no specific length or level of experience requirements. The applicant's overall background of experience, education and
training must clearly demonstrate the ability to perform maintenance mechanic worker duties, such as those described in the duties section of this
announcement, without more than normal supervision. Applicants must have experience in carpentry and plumbing.
Applicants must meet the screen out elements and achieve an overall score of at least fifty (50%) or higher
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done. We will credit all qualifying volunteer experience in your application.
