About the Position:
This position has been identified as a secondary position and has been approved for firefighter special retirement coverage. In order to qualify for secondary coverage, the incumbent must have 3 years of primary experience.
Estimated annual pay range based on 56-hour workweek is approximately $ 80,805 - 105,060.
Duties
As a Fire Protection Specialist, you are responsible for the following duties:
Independently develop, operate and maintain an effective fire prevention/inspection, safety and training program for the installation.
Organize, direct and coordinate fire prevention related training for the installation.
Perform troubleshooting and alignment of life safety systems.
Investigate fires to determine the cause and origin.
Attend planning meetings, develop internal policies and procedures and review project plans and drawings on modifications and new construction of facilities.
Respond to emergency incidents and assumes immediate command and control and serve as the staff officer on duty when scheduled.
Determine training needs, develop lesson plans and evaluate training programs.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain Kansas State or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification. You MUST submit a copy of your certification with your application package.
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 45 lbs. or more in the regular performance of duties.
- This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- This position requires wearing a uniform and safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- This position requires a 56-hour weekly tour of duty (includes weekends, nights and/or holidays) with one night over each week and is subject to recall to duty, as required.
- This position requires participation in the DoD Physical Fitness Training Program IAW DoD NFPA requirements.
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
- This position requires the incumbent to successfully complete an annual Job Performance Test.
- Within the first year of occupying the position, you must obtain and then continue to maintain the following Department of Defense Firefighter Certifications: Incident Safety Officer and Health and Safety Officer.
- This position may require the employee to work under adverse environmental conditions. The incumbent may be subject to dense smoke, flames, extreme heat, cold, dust, water, and possible explosions as well as exposure to toxic fumes and materials.
- Incumbent must be able to maintain necessary alertness, self-control, and emotional stability under emergency conditions.

In order to qualify, you must meet the requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer or governmental fire department or brigade; performing emergency medical care and controlling hazardous materials incidents OR (2) detecting, reducing or eliminating potential fire hazards and providing training in fire protection and prevention.This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
Selective Placement Factor: In addition to the specialized experience required to qualify for the Fire Protection Inspector (GS-09 level) you must also possess and maintain ALL the following Department of Defense (or reciprocal equivalent) certifications: Fire Inspector I and II, Fire Instructor I and II, Fire Officer I and II, HAZMAT Operations, HAZMAT Technician, HAZMAT Awareness, HAZMAT Incident Commander, Public Fire and Life Safety Educator and Plans Examiner I. You MUST attach a copy of all the required certifications to your application.
