About the Position: This position serves as a Fire Protection Inspector for the Fire Protection and Prevention Division on Ft. Leavenworth, Ks.This position may be filled at the GS 7 or GS 8 level. The full performance level of GS-08 is received through the intervening GS-07 level
Estimated annual pay range based on 56-hour workweek is approximately $ 62,859. - $ 90,497.
Duties
As a Fire Protection Inspector, you are responsible for the following duties:
Conduct inspections of buildings for violations of fire regulations and codes.
Inspect fire detection equipment (i.e., alarms, sprinkler valve operation, supervisory switches, fire pumps, etc.) to determine if they are adequate for fire protection purposes.
Provide installation-wide fire prevention training, lectures and demonstrations to educate patrons on fire safety.
Establish fire safety programs for incoming personnel and installation activities to inform them of fire prevention techniques.
Conduct training of firefighters in basic fire inspection methods to keep them abreast of fire regulations.
Explain fire codes to help design professionals, contractors and others avoid code violations.
Review monthly fire inspection reports in order make corrective actions to deficiencies.
Conduct plan reviews for new construction in accordance with NFPA requirements.
Operate firefighting equipment (e.g. fire hydrants, fire extinguishers, mechanized equipment, and ladders) to suppress and extinguish fires.
Provide team support of fire suppression to ensure all structural and non-structural fires are controlled and extinguished.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles. NOTE: YOU MUST ATTACH A COPY OF YOUR DRIVER'S LICENSE TO YOUR APPLICATION PACKAGE.
- Must be able to pass pre-appointment and subsequent periodic medical examinations IAW DoD 6055.5M to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
- The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- This position requires wearing a uniform and safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- This position requires a 56-hour weekly tour of duty (includes weekends, nights and/or holidays) with one night over each week and is subject to recall to duty, as required.
- This position requires participation in the Agency or Department's health and wellness program.
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
- Fire Protection Inspectors hired at the GS 07 level must successfully complete any and all required training, to include the Public Fire and Life Safety Educator certification within a maximum of 12 months.

To Qualify for the GS 7 Level Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing general fire prevention inspections of various types of structures, identifying fire hazards and conditions and correcting deficiencies. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
Selective Placement Factor: In addition to the specialized experience required to qualify for the Fire Protection Inspector (GS-07 level) you must also possess and maintain ALL the following Department of Defense (or reciprocal equivalent) certifications: HAZMAT Awareness, HAZMAT Operations, Fire Inspector I, Fire Instructor I and Firefighter I and II. NOTE YOU MUST ATTACH A COPY OF ALL THE REQUIRED CERTIFICATES TO YOUR APPLICATION PACKAGE.
To Qualify for the GS 8 Level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing fire protection and prevention inspections, providing technical expertise in hazardous material storage functions and ensuring that facilities are in compliance with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
Selective Placement Factor: In addition to the specialized experience required to qualify for the Fire Protection Inspector (GS-08 level) you must also possess and maintain ALL the following Department of Defense (or reciprocal equivalent) certifications: Fire Inspector I and II, Fire Instructor I, Fire Fighter I and II, HAZMAT Operations and Public Fire and Life Safety Educator.
