This position is located in the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Operational Support Division, Office of Investigative Technology, Infrastructure Support Unit. This position(s) primary purpose is to serve as an expert in the management and administration of Telecommunications Systems and Information Technology Networks, used by the Office of Investigative Technology, Operations Support Division.

As a Telecommunications Specialist (Ops Support)your typical work assignments may include: Establishes cellular, digital, radio, satellite, and analog communications for operational support technologies (i.e. phones, mobile networks, computers) used by personnel throughout the organization, implements secure information connection protocols, tests devices prior to deployment, and responds to technical issues domestically or internationally. Represents organizations in formal matters concerning the procurement and acquisition of technologies, sufficient to advise on optimal solutions that can support a distributed communications network that provides global telecommunications services to agency operational personnel. Manages information technology applications, systems, and networks, sufficient to provide technical support and leadership for Wireless Area Networks, Satellite Communication Systems, Sensor and Access Control Systems, Remote Access, or Video Conferencing Systems, or other technology platform that facilitates the transmission of information. Provides reporting by detailing compliance violations of systems, platforms, programs, or hardware; develops infographics or other visual guides to depict network environment and proposed changes, and authoritatively instructs managers at various levels the need to modify or adapt hardware, programs, or networks to constantly changing environments for security and compliance purposes.

  • Employee is required t become certified Investigative Technology Specialist (Ops Support). GS-0391-13 within 12-18 months of assignment.
  • This position is entitled to Administratively Uncontrollable Overtime (AUO).

Qualifications

The Telecommunications Series, 0391, has an Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR), which must be met for this position in addition to the minimum qualification requirement. Basic Requirement Education: Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study -- electrical or electronic engineering, mathematics, physics, public utilities, statistics, computer science, telecommunications management, information systems management, business administration, industrial management, or other fields related to the position to be filled. OR Specialized Experience: Experience in evaluating, analyzing, developing, managing, or improving communications systems, procedures, and requirements that demonstrated knowledge of current developments and trends in communications concepts and technology. AND You may qualify at the GS-12 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirement: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private sector, which demonstrates experience performing: (1) Configuring, installing, and/or managing telecommunications systems; (2) Integrating telecommunications equipment including radio, telephone, and/or data transmitters to support communication related to field programs; (3) Assisting in the development of telecommunications guidance or policy related to the use of radio transmissions; and (4) Applying communication site practices for the safe installation of radio systems. You may qualify at the GS-13 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirement: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private sector, which demonstrates experience performing: (1) Configuring, installing, and/or managing telecommunications systems; (2) Integrating telecommunications equipment including radio, telephone, and/or data transmitters to support communication related to field programs; (3) Developing telecommunications guidance or policy related to the use of radio transmissions; and (4) Implementing and applying communication site practices for the safe installation of radio systems. Specialized experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
