Duties

If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for providing a variety of complex paralegal support assignments relating to the prosecutions and grand jury investigations for Federal cases in Federal Major Crimes in the Criminal Division. Typical work assignments will include: - Performs legal research and assists with conducting interviews of agents and potential witnesses. - Drafts, organizes, indexes, and maintains relevant court filings and exhibits for completeness and accuracy for preparation during trial. - Provides a variety of complex paralegal support assignments relating to prosecutions and grand jury. - Communicates updates and informs staff members of case status and serves as the contact person. - Performs searches, retrieves, and redacts a large volume of electronic case information based on rules, policies, procedures, and court filings. - Ensures documents are organized and processed for efficient auto storage, search, and retrieval. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Requirements

  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation

Qualifications

To qualify as a GS-11 you must have 1 year of specialized experience at the GS-09 Federal level, a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related, or a combination. To be qualified for the GS-11 Paralegal Specialist, you must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal Service; or a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related; or a combination of specialized experience and education. Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience that equips the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is defined as scanning, indexing, and organizing documents for efficient automated storage, search and retrieval by utilizing parameters and criteria in a database; assists attorneys with conducting interviews of agents and potential witnesses to prepare for grand jury and trial; prepares, processes and maintains a variety of substantive legal documents, exhibits and other relevant discovery material in case file development for court presentation during trial, including reviewing the production for completeness and accuracy; performing any appropriate redactions to safeguard privacy based on a thorough understanding of relevant court ruling; collaborating and communicating with management, attorneys, witnesses, law enforcement to collect and relay case details, status updates and deadlines; and utilizing automated resources and technology for the development and processing documents, legal research, preparing computerized presentation programs, and data retrieval from various database, i.e., word processing, court room presentation, spreadsheet or database management in developing reports, statistical data, text and graphics. OR Education: a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related. Education at the graduate level must be in an accredited college or university and must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position. OR Combining Education and Experience: a combination of specialized experience and education which when combined equal 100% of the requirements. Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. In order to qualify based on a combination, graduate education must be in excess of 2 full years. Note: To calculate your percentage of graduate education, first determine the total number of graduate hours that exceed 36 semester hours (or your school's definition of two years of graduate study), then divide the total number of your excess graduate semester hours by 18 (or your school's definition of one year of graduate study). To calculate your percentage of qualifying experience, divide your total number of months of qualifying experience by 12. Now, add the two percentages together. The sum of the percentages must equal at least 100%. (Only graduate education in excess of the first two years may be used in this calculation.) Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies. If your agency has notified you in writing that you are a displaced employee eligible for ICTAP consideration, you may receive selection priority if: 1) this vacancy is within your ICTAP eligibility; 2) you apply under the instructions in the announcement; and 3) you are found well-qualified for this vacancy.
