This position is located in the Small Business Administration, Office of General Counsel in Washington, DC. Serves as the Supervisory Paralegal Specialist and is responsible for providing technical oversight and administration to a team of subordinate paralegal specialists.
Duties
Provides technical and administrative first line supervision to a group of GS-9, GS-11, GS-12 and/or GS-13 paralegal specialists, supporting Office of General Counsel attorneys working in Agency headquarters in the areas of ethics, financial law and lender oversight, general law, legislation and appropriations, litigation and claims, or procurement law.
Assists attorneys in the litigation of cases by conducting legal research to check and verify legal citations, quotes and other language in legal work product, utilizing standard legal research techniques and databases, including Westlaw, to assure accuracy, completeness and validity.
Assists attorneys in reviewing, analyzing, and interpreting proposed Agency regulations, Standard Operating Procedures, or other policy documents to ensure that the regulation and policy meets legal and agency guidelines.
Drafts procedural legal documents, to move cases forward in the litigative process.
Prepares draft answers to interrogators and other discovery requests for review by attorneys.
Requirements
- You must be a U.S. Citizen.
- You must be a current SBA career/conditional competitive service employee.
- You must successfully complete a background investigation.
- You may be required to serve a one-year supervisory probationary period.
Qualifications
For the GS-14: One year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-13 grade level obtained in either the public or private sector, which includes:
Provides guidance and direction to paralegals and/or legal assistants; and
Provides technical direction on complex issues, performs advanced legal research to check and verify legal citations; and
Serves as a coordinator for major projects involving paralegals and non-legal employees, assist attorneys in analyzing internal policy, drafting procedural legal documents and answers to interrogatories as well as other discovery requests
