The incumbent serves as a Legal Assistant in the Office of Administrative Law Judges (OALJ). OALJ is responsible for conducting adjudicatory hearings and issuing decisions for the Department of Labor under more than 80 separate and varied statutes and executive orders.
This position is inside the bargaining unit.
Position subject to a 5-day minimum on-site work requirement.
Duties
Independently reviews case initiation documents and resolves procedural issues that arise in the case opening process, including fees, captions, parties, and representation.
Assists with the assignment of cases by identifying potential jurisdictional problems for the Chief Judge and Associate Chief Judges.
Utilizes basic office software such as Outlook (including eFax), Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Desktop Publishing, Access, SharePoint, and Adobe Acrobat to prepare legal documents and correspondence.
Reads incoming mail related to the assigned functional area and inputs the appropriate tracking data into the Case Tracking System (CTS/DMS) and management information system.
Ensures that documents are placed in the proper case files and are promptly given to judges for necessary action.
Prepares replies to correspondence for signature that can be handled independently based on knowledge of the case involved or from brief oral guidance.
Serves as the focal point in providing advice and performing legal research for assigned cases.
Prepares and assembles documents, including necessary transmittal forms and envelopes, in accepted office format under OALJ's rules for timely mailing, submission to courts, and service of others as appropriate.
Requirements

- Must be at least 16 years old.
- Candidate required to obtain the necessary security/investigation level.
- Requires a probationary period if the requirement has not been met.
Qualifications
Specialized Experience is the experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform the duties of the position successfully, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level.

GS-06: Applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, GS-05, in the Federal Service, Examples of qualifying specialized experience include:
Providing support to an administrative law judge by preparing complaints, motions, subpoenas, orders, or other hearing and/or trial documents accurately and in proper format;
Verifying citations and statutory references contained in legal documents;
Assisting with discovery, hearing or trial preparation by performing duties such as compiling trial notebooks, or witness and using software applications and legal and non-legal databases to produce legal related reports and documents, or conduct research.
Education
There is no education requirement or education substitution for experience at the GS-06 level for this position.
