Duties
This Writer-Editor position is located Training & Development (T&D)/Front Office, Transportation Security Administration, Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Duties include but are not limited to:
Writes and edits high-quality products that effectively explain and interpret the Agency's stance on various transportation security issues. Uses and provides guidance to program offices on various word processing, desktop publishing, and electronic publishing programs/systems. Reworks draft responses to ensure accuracy, clarity, conciseness, and adherence to the Agency's Style Guide.
Serves as the primary writer/editor supporting the researching, writing, editing, and coordinating of materials for signature by Agency management officials. Supports the development and management of the Agency's Style Guide, Correspondence Manual and correspondence standard operating procedures, and leads associated training for employees across Agency.
Serves as an advisor to Training and Development senior leadership on matters of executive-level correspondence production. Identifies process improvements related to writing Ability to represent the Agency in matters and activities related to federal plain language requirements and standards. Thorough knowledge of the Representing the Agency in matters and activities related to federal plain language requirements and standards. Experience administering principles of plain MRN: Position Title: 3 | Page and review; provides solutions to program offices' writing challenges; reviews executive-level correspondence and reports for adherence to Agency, Department, and component styles and standards; and advises program offices on correspondence standards and processes.
Participates in agency teams to review writing and editorial policies and guidelines, resolve style and editorial differences, and make recommendations for updating these requirements consistent with office priorities, program needs, and federal plain language best practices.
Ensures proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar; reviews and approves proposed publications for style, design, and similar editorial characteristics before release for printing, publication, or dissemination.
The major duties described above reflect the full performance level of this position. Typically, the lower pay (H) band performs the same duties but will receive more guidance and training; and/or projects/work assignments may be less complex.
Qualifications
To qualify for the SV-H Pay Band (equivalent to GS-12), you must have one year of specialized experience at the SV-G or GS-11 in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private sector. Specialized experience is defined as experience that has equipped you with the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience is defined as:
- Experience in executive-level correspondence assignment, coordination, and clearance activities.
- Experience performing as writer-editor administering various writing projects
To qualify for the SV-I Pay Band (equivalent to GS-13), you must have one year of specialized experience at the SV-H or GS-12 in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private sector. Specialized experience is defined as experience that has equipped you with the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience is defined as:
- Experience utilizing analytical skill to ensure writing/editing material is accurate and informative
- Experience managing writing assignment; including interpreting technical information, identifying and prioritizing critical content, ensuring alignment with interests of intended audience, consistency with policy and program goals.
Credit for experience is given based on a 40-hour workweek. Part-time experience is credited on a part-time ratio, i.e., working 20 hours per week for two months equals one month of experience. No additional credit is given for overtime.
National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
