What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position? There are two vacancies to be filled in Lakewood, CO and/or in Sioux Fall, SD; however, this announcement may be used to fill additional vacancies if they become available.

Duties

As an IT Specialist (SysAdmin) within the DOI, USGS, Water Mission Area (WMA), Enterprise Technology Office (ETO) Infrastructure and Services Branch you will perform the following duties: Plans and carries out difficult and complex assignments in a variety of systems administration areas. Independently provides advice and guidance on a wide range and variety of complex IT issues, evaluating and recommending new or enhanced approaches. Maintains systems integrity and availability anticipating likely capacity or configuration problems and initiating corrective or preventive actions. Reprioritizes and allocates resources as they become available and recommends additional components to improve overall system performance. Analyzes and provides cost-benefit analyses to decision-makers for recommended changes. Consults with customers to identify priorities and best approaches for integrating systems administration requirements into daily operations. Develops standard operating procedures for a variety of IT hardware tasks or activities. Physical Demands: The work is primarily sedentary. Some work may involve travel to and attendance at meetings and conferences away from the work site. Some employees may carry light items such as papers, books, or small parts, or drive a motor vehicle. The work does not require any special physical effort. Work Environment: The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions. Some employees may occasionally be exposed to uncomfortable conditions in such places as research facilities.

Qualifications

Individuals must have IT-related experience demonstrating each of the four competencies listed below. Attention to Detail - Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail. Customer Service - Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services. Oral Communication - Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately. Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations. For GS-12: In addition to the competencies listed above, applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-12 level: One year of appropriate specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service that demonstrates accomplishment of computer project assignments that required a wide range of knowledge of computer requirements and techniques pertinent to the position to be filled. This level of work experience may include installing, configuring and managing Windows and Linux Server Operating Systems. Managing major enterprise infrastructure hardware and server platforms including NetApp, EMC/Dell, HP, and Cisco. Provides support in an environment using containers and/or Kubernetes. This level of work experience would reflect independence in planning and carrying out the assignment, selecting the approach or methodology to be used, resolving most of the conflicts that arise, and coordinating the work with others as necessary. You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must provide acceptable documentation that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.
