This position is located in the Sports and Fitness Division, Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Department, Naval Station Newport, Newport RI. Incumbent serves as the Recreation Specialist to the Sports and Fitness Division Head in several facets for planning, promoting, and coordinating, conducting various segments of a comprehensive aquatics, sports and fitness program to meet the recreational, and physical fitness
Duties
Responsible for the program management of a comprehensive aquatics program that encompasses a full range of programs in both traditional and non-traditional activities/events on water as well as land. In addition, oversee multi-purpose gymnasium, indoor pool and fitness center located in Building 1109.
Oversees shared recreation assistant/desk staff, and combined front desk operations. Oversees the operation of all pools, pool facilities, and associated aquatics programs including lessons, parties, special events, swim meets, RPT, and all related activities. Reviews patron usage, and assesses needs. Researches and recommends additions and/or changes to current programming, providing data to substantiate. Ensures programs are suited to site patronage and within facility limitations and meet time and financial constraints.
Oversees the maintenance of all pools and equipment. Keeps accurate maintenance records and maintains proper water chemistry at all times. Maintains internal controls over all pool related facilities, equipment, supplies and fees. Coordinates with Staff Civil Engineer, Public Works Center and local Contractors regarding pool maintenance problems.
Administers all safety programs related to pools and maintains a safe and healthful environment for all pool personnel and patrons. Enforces all regulations, laws, instructions, rules and safety requirements at all times.
Assists in preparation and administration of annual aquatics budget. Prepares all purchase orders, vouchers, and personnel service contracts related to aquatics. Orders supplies, chemicals, and equipment.

Qualifications

A qualified candidate must possess:
Knowledge gained through relevant education and training including a minimum of Bachelor's Degree in Recreation or closely related field
OR
At least four years of documented experience that demonstrates the ability to apply the principles of one or more specialty areas of recreation
Must have knowledge to analyze a variety of pool problems, incumbent must possess current Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification and be trained in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Incumbent should have satisfactorily completed a swimming pool operator's clinic. The incumbent, if not currently holding these certificates, will obtain them within six months of employment. All copies of the certifications must be maintained in their official personnel file. Skill in performing and teaching techniques of swimming and lifesaving. Knowledge of principles and techniques of maintaining proper water chemistry and sanitation.
Must be capable of organizing and operating a wide range of related and unrelated water and land programs. Ability to render decisions and react responsibly to various problems and/or situations that may arise, based on knowledge of current and past problems and precedents relating to all aquatic, athletic and recreation programs. Knowledge of basic rules and sportsmanship associated with a large sports and intramural program. Knowledge of the range of activities and services, of participant needs and interests, and of the methods and processes involved in a typical and conventional basic aquatic program
