Duties

CBP Office of Trade is the architect of the most robust customs system in the world and the second largest revenue source for the U.S. Government. We facilitate legitimate trade, enforce U.S. laws, and protect the American economy as well as consumer health and safety. Collaborating with industry and government partners, we create a fair, competitive, and safe trade environment, and we enforce U.S. trade law to protect national economic security. Our expertise in the trade community allows us to lead the development of streamlined and efficient processes that provide certainty for legitimate importers, while combatting transnational crime. As a Writer/Editor (Quality Assurance) you are responsible for reviewing and editing all Office of Trade written deliverables staffed for review by Office of Trade leadership for grammar and compliance with CBP style and standards. This position starts at a salary of $99,200.00 (GS-12, Step 1) to $153,354.00 (GS-13, Step 10). GS Salary: Visit this link to view the locality pay tables by geographic area. Typical duties may include: Serving as the subject-matter expert on grammar, style, and formatting of written products prepared by Office of Trade personnel by editing grammar, punctuation, style, and format; and evaluating products for purpose, audience, scope, content, organization, and logic. Maintaining awareness of current government writing and reporting style and format requirements while working directly with appropriate senior officials to resolve questions about content and technical application utilizing the CBP Style Guide with associated templates as the primary reference. Communicating with Office of Trade personnel to ensure that all correspondence processes and protocols are maintained. Assisting staff and action officers in preparing clear, accurate, and concisely written documents representing major trade issues. Determining whether tabular or graphic material is needed and recommending how the material can be clearly presented.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for the GS-12 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as: Researching, writing, reviewing, and editing products on a variety of topics to ensure that the content is accurate and tailored to appropriately convey the intended message and relevant style guide conventions. Checking the accuracy of communications products, examining logical argumentation, and determining whether the product meets the intended goals and align with office mission and strategy. Facilitating communication of agency-wide and office events, programs, activities, and initiatives across the full spectrum of topics and priorities. Developing and implementing office editorial policies, practices, guidelines, and standards, and maintaining awareness of current government writing, reporting style, and format requirements according to relevant style guides and leadership preferences. Providing program assistance to organizations supported by the installation through formal memoranda. Experience: You qualify for the GS-13 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as: Providing communications support via writing and editing expertise for special projects and assignments on a wide variety of issues with audiences throughout the agency, office, other governmental leaders, the trade industry, and the public. Developing strategic communication messages based on office leadership guidance and ensuring that existing messages are incorporated into appropriate type of medium and product development, while assisting staff in preparing clear, accurate, and concisely written documents. Writing executive-level talking points, scripts and speeches tailored to the trade industry, intergovernmental and public audiences, both internal and external to the agency depending on the event and the identified objectives. Coordinating proposed changes in approach, emphasis, and presentation directly with the writer to produce the necessary revisions, analyses, and recommendations when documents are unclear and extensive rewriting is needed to achieve a more organized presentation and communication goals. Writing, gathering, developing, and checking the accuracy of information through research and interviews with subject­ matter specialists, program officials, and policy makers. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must: Meet all qualification requirements, including education if applicable to this position, subject to verification at any stage of the application process; and Meet all applicable Time in Grade requirements (current federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent grade band in the federal service) by 07/08/2024. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees. Current and former federal employees may be required to serve or complete a probationary period.
