About the Position: Serves as a Range Operations Specialist to ensure proper management of range operations in accordance with safety and Army regulation, policy and procedural guidance. This position is being announced as a TERM not to exceed 30 SEPT 2026. This position may be extended up to a maximum of eight years. As a Term employee, you are eligible for coverage under the Federal Employees Benefits Programs, Thrift Savings Plan and annual/sick leave.

Duties

Implements range operation functions directly related to the safe and efficient utilization of the Range Complex and Restricted Airspace. During firings and gunneries, provides oversight on regulatory requirements pertaining to unit operations on the Range. Monitor firing and range activities on ranges and training areas, considering proximity, compatibility of systems, or to suspend operations if the safety of personnel is questionable. Monitor assigned restricted airspace using the Surveillance Tracking Acquisition Radar System (STARS) and guidance from Installation Air Traffic and Airspace Officer or G-3 Air.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Position requires working irregular duty hours which may include evenings, weekends and holidays; shift work necessary to cover 24 hour-a-day, 7 days per week operation; occasional overtime may be required.
  • Must have normal depth perception and color vision (necessary to monitor radar screen); acute hearing, ability to speak clearly and to communicate effectively (no speech impediments).
  • The incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a Valid State Driver's License

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting in the management of live-fire range and training areas; monitoring range and training exercises; AND providing advisories and assistance to personnel utilizing live-fire range and training areas. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position such Natural Resources, or Forest Resources. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Customer ServiceDecision MakingOral CommunicationPlanning and EvaluatingTechnical Competence Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the second lower grade or equivalent (GS-07).
