You will serve as a Machinist in the Industrial Production Support Department, Plant Technical Services of FLEET READINESS CENTER SOUTHWEST. This announcement uses the Direct Hire Authority for Certain Personnel of the Department of Defense to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service.

Duties

You will set up and perform machining operations on conventional and numerical control machine tools. You will manufacture, repair, and rebuild parts and items of equipment from raw stock of different metals and metal alloys and precision handwork to complete machinist tasks. You will maintain dimensions and tolerances, fits and finishes in processing work utilizing precision measuring instruments. You will set up and operate all types of conventional machines, numerically-controlled machines and related equipment in the manufacture, rework, and repair of aircraft parts and components, and support work. You will maintain accuracy in accordance with requirements of blueprints, drawings and sketches, work documents, aircraft technical documents, manuals, bulletins, directives, and requests from the Machinist Supervisor.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.

Qualifications

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies from the screen out listed below. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: 1) Setting up, adjusting and operating all types of machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, CNC mills, CNC lathers and grinding machines; 2) Working to close tolerances; 3) Using precision measuring instruments such as: micrometers, dial indicators, precision gage blocks, vernier calipers, height gages and special tolerance gages; 4) Working with carbon steel, stainless steels, copper, brass, aluminum alloys and other metal; 5) Working from blueprints, engineering specifications, or technical documents; and 6) Using shop mathematics and handbook formulas to calculate dimensions and layout work. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
