This position is located in the Laundry Section of Environmental Management Service, Veterans Healthcare System of the Ozarks, Fayetteville, Arkansas. Responsible for the operation and maintenance on the commercial-type laundry equipment and will process hospital linens, employee uniforms and patient wearing apparel on a timely basis to meet general production schedules.
Duties
Sorts items received into washing classifications based on fabric content and color and degree of soil or stains.
Ensures that all soiled laundry and equipment are kept physically separate from clean laundry side of the building.
Identifies wash classifications and records weights in production records.
Ensures the washer-extractors are loaded according to their rated capacity and equally balanced.
Unloads pass through washer/extractor into laundry bags and sends wet wash to other processing departments within laundry plant.
Uses correct water temperature, water and timing cycles and automatic injection of wash compounds at various states in cycle.
Process wash classification through 60 lbs, 200 lbs, and two 400 lbs washer/extractors.
Determines which linen can be mixed in what order to meet full equipment utilization.
Keeps work area neat and orderly at all times.
Assist with the general housekeeping in the clean side of the building.
Fill injectors with the correct wash compounds for the formula being used.
Use special stain removing chemicals and procedures to remove stains from laundry items.
Conducts testing to include pH titration, water hardiness and test samples for quality end product and maximum fabric life.
Performs duties having a sequence of several related tasks.
Selects correct pre-determined wash formula to process the load in order to meet quality control standards.
Keep laundry production records and calculate production costs in washroom.
Process special items such as pillows, wool blankets and specially marked items separately from regular wash items.
Understands infection control procedures.
Watchful of linen to ensure sanitation is not compromised.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00 am - 3:30 pm (subject to change based on the needs of the agency).

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Incumbent needs physical ability for accomplishment of heavy physical tasks for extended periods. Physical demands include: pushing heavy carts; lifting loads of over 50 lbs.; pulling wet wash from washer/extractor and continual bending, stooping, walking and standing on concrete floors. Working conditions include machinery noise; hot and humid atmosphere; offensive odors while sorting and washing soiled linen, which is contaminated with infectious organisms and having wet clothing and shoes while pulling laundry loads. Incumbent is subjected to the possibility of minor cuts, scrapes, bruises and needle wounds.
