This position is part of the National Archives and Records Administration. Incumbent performs work that supports access to archival holdings and physical and intellectual control over the records. The work encompasses a broad range of functions including accessioning of records, processing, arranging, describing, digitizing, providing reference support, and assistance to researchers.
Duties
The following are the duties of this position at the GS-7. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.
As an Archives Technician, you will:
Review information about records prior to making them available to researchers, ensuring that access restrictions are being followed.
Prepare online catalog descriptions of holdings at all levels according to NARA lifecycle standards, policies, and procedures. Creates technical and descriptive metadata.
Develop and implement archival description projects and assists in the preparation of finding aids for collections and series under the direction of an archivist.
Work within a framework of established archival and records policies, rules, and regulations.
Qualifications
You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.
For the GS-05, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes:
Communicating to customer inquiries, verbally or in writing;
AND
Experience pulling/filing records;
AND
Following and referencing archival policy and procedures.
OR
You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows: 4 years above high school.
OR
You may qualify by a combination of experience and education.
NOTE: Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.
In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable:
For the GS-5, you must have been at the GS-4level for 52 weeks.
Education
Education Requirements: The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
