Duties

You will serve as an INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SPECIALIST (SYSADMIN) in the METEOROLOGY AND OCEANOGRAPHY (METOC) SYSTEMS AND INFRASTRUCTURE (N6) DEPARTMENT of FLEET WEATHER CENTER (FLEWEACEN), Norfolk, VA. You will perform a wide variety of detailed tasks required to maintain systems administration, cybersecurity, network development, and lifecycle management of the command’s mission and customer requirements. You will respond to system failures caused by software and hardware deficiencies. You will perform diagnostic testing and use various analysis techniques to isolate the sources of problems. You will assist in developing plans and schedules/perform the installation of new METOC systems and infrastructures. You will execute and implement system administration policies and procedures as required by appropriate directives. You will author, develop, integrate, and maintains web applications supporting the command’s mission. You will apply and enforce policies, procedures, and appropriate security and technical standards to ensure commonality and interoperability web services.

  • This is a Cyberspace Workforce position, work role code 451, proficiency level INTERMEDIATE the incumbent is required to obtain and maintain qualifications in DoDM 8140.03 Cyber Workforce Qualification and Department of Navy policies.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision.

Qualifications

Applicants must have directly applicable experience that demonstrates the possession of knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies necessary for immediate success in the position. Qualifying experience may have been acquired in any public or private sector job but will clearly demonstrate past experience in the application of the particular competencies or knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to successfully perform the duties of the position. Such experience is typically in or directly relates to the work of the position to be filled. Selective placement factor: This position has TWO selective placement factors needed in order to qualify. In accordance with SECNAV 5239.2, Appendix 4, Intermediate/Journeyman cybersecurity credential, at a minimum, this position requires: Cybersecurity credentials: (one of the following credentials) CompTIA Security+; GIAC Security Essentials (GSEC); and/or ISC2 Systems Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP). AND Computing Environment Certifications: (one of the following certifications) Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) and/or CompTIA LINUX+. ****Failure to possess this factor WILL result in an ineligible rating. Possession of the factor must be verifiable by submitting a copy of credentials and certifications**** AND You must have IT-related experience demonstrating each of the four competencies listed below 1) Attention to Detail- Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail. IT-related experience demonstrating this competency include: Monitoring and implementing of mandatory cybersecurity configurations on servers to defend and protect against unauthorized intrusion and access. 2) Customer Service- Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services. IT-related experience demonstrating this competency include: Planning and coordinating the maintenance, upgrade, and support of servers and computers in a complex networked environment for a large number of customers. 3) Oral Communication- Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately. IT-related experience demonstrating this competency include: Preparing briefings and attending conferences to present operational capabilities, limitations, and related information. 4) Problem Solving: Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations. IT-related experience demonstrating this competency include: Evaluating and recommending the adoption of improvements in server management technologies to provide for enhanced systems reliability and functionality. AND In addition to your experience demonstrating the competencies above, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: *Experience leading the planning, installation, configuration, testing, implementation, and management of the systems environment in support of an organization's IT architecture. *Experience utilizing Linux operating systems, including file structure, internal commands and processes, system management, system security, backup and restore to operate and maintain the system *Experience following TCP/IP, HTTP, FTP and various other protocols. *Experience performing diagnostic testing and isolating source of problems with IT systems Additional qualification information can be found from the following Office of Personnel Management website: https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/classification-qualifications/general-schedule-qualification-standards/2200/information-technology-it-management-series-2210-alternative-a/ Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social).
