You will serve as a SUPERVISORY INTERDISCIPLINARY OCEANOGRAPHER/GEOPHYSICIST/PHYSICIST/PHYSICAL SCIENTIST in the OPERATIONAL SUPPORT DIVISION, ACOUSTICS DEPARTMENT of NAVOCEANO BAY ST LOUIS.

Duties

You will be responsible for the organization, supervision, and coordination of the work of the Division. You will assign projects to personnel, communicate objectives, priorities, and schedules, and assess progress as measured by overall objectives. You will provide guidance on Scientific, technical, and administrative problems. You will determine priorities and work with established requirements and special programs to schedule completion dates for projects assigned to the Division. You will direct and manage scientific and technical projects that require advanced knowledge of underwater acoustics, acoustics models and databases, and acoustic systems. You will review work progress and assure compliance with official directives and policies through inspection, critical analysis of interim and final reports, and conferences with the Division. You will be responsible for preparing the Division’s budget and ensuring the most cost-effective expenditures of that budget. You will coordinate with senior management to develop annual spend plans and near and long-term resource planning documents.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.

  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.

  • Occasional sea duty may be required to maintain competence.

  • Occasional evening/weekend work is required.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience directing personnel in processing geophysical and acoustic data to develop, maintain and execute quality control and acoustic and geophysical databases. Experience planning work to be accomplished by subordinates; setting and adjusting priorities; and preparing key timelines for completion of work in accordance with mission requirements. Experience in numeric modeling. Experience planning, evaluating and executing long-range programs and projects. Experience developing near and long-term plans (e.g., cost plans, budget, mission execution strategies) to ensure mission goals and objectives are met. Experience developing plans to execute acoustic environmental data collection surveys. Experience using collected acoustic data to generate databases and on-demand products and services. Basic Requirements:
  1. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
or
  1. Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Physics Series 1310
Individual Occupational Requirements
Basic Requirements:

  1. Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics.
or
  1. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In either A or B above, the courses must have included a fundamental course in general physics and, in addition, courses in any two of the following: electricity and magnetism, heat, light, mechanics, modern physics, and sound.

Geophysics Series 1313

  1. Degree: that included at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.).

Oceanography Series 1360
Individual Occupational Requirements
Basic Requirements:
  1. Degree: major study of at least 24 semester hours in oceanography or a related discipline such as physics, meteorology, geophysics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, geology, or biology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of oceanography, physics, geophysics, chemistry, mathematics, meteorology, computer science, and engineering sciences.
or
  1. Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Applicants who qualify on the basis of major study in biology or geology must have had at least 6 semester hours in the major directly concerned with marine science or 6 semester hours in oceanography; applicants who qualify on the basis of other physical sciences or engineering must have had differential and integral calculus and at least 6 semester hours in physics.
