This position will be assigned to the Air Force Services Center at Port San Antonio, TX.
This is a regular full-time category position with guaranteed 40 hrs. per week. Employees appointed to a regular category position are eligible for benefits.
Duties
Serves as Retirement Technician in the Pension Section of the Retirement Branch, Insurance and Benefits Division. Analyzes, evaluates, and adjudicates retirement, disability, and survivor annuity benefit cases. Processes enrollments and terminations, which includes determining eligibility, verifying documentation, payroll reconciliation, corresponding verbally and in writing, and maintaining participant files. Has authority for approval of participant contribution refunds up to $1,000 per case. Monitors various suspense systems to ensure that benefit payments commence timely and annuitants are not overpaid. Maintains knowledge of and uses Social Security income benefit determination procedures. Provides technical information regarding the highly complex provisions of the retirement plan. Assists with administration of portability benefits related to APF employees participating in the retirement plan. Assists with implementation of annuity cost-of-living adjustments, to include participant notification and calculation of adjusted payment amounts. Has contact with NAF employees at all echelons, Human Resources Offices, attorneys, annuitants, and family members. Performs other related duties as assigned.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Qualifying Experience:
Customer service orientation, with extensive experience of defined benefits and defined contribution retirement plans. Experience working effectively with other employees that have a variety of backgrounds and training. Sufficient experience with retirement benefit plans to be able to perform the complete spectrum of functions within an assigned area. Experience with adjudicating retirement benefit cases according to accepted practices and methods. Experience with examining documentation to evaluate that requirements are to satisfaction, and grant or deny benefits. Experience with software administration relating to employee benefit plans.

Ability to think independently and resolve problems/variances on own initiative applying sound judgement and providing alternative solutions.
Skills with MS Office application software, computer databases, spreadsheets, and power point presentations.
