This position is a Geographer assigned to the Office of Spatial Analysis and Visualization (OSAV) of the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) within the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). The incumbent is responsible for managing critical national geospatial programs, conducting geospatial transportation analysis and effectively communicating results.

Qualifications

To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you must (1) meet the Education Requirement for the series, (2) provide a copy of transcripts for verification, AND (3) experience qualifications for the grade at which you are requesting consideration. To qualify for the GS-12 on Experience, you must have at least one year of experience equal or equivalent to the GS-11 it must include:  Experience communicating ideas, concepts, methods, analyses, evaluations, and recommendations in a lucid, logical and convincing manner. Experience developing guidelines, plans and reports, relating to the compilation and dissemination of geospatial data and information to ensure information is accurate, reliable, and relevant. You cannot qualify on education at the GS-12 level; you must have experience. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Geospatial Data Management: Knowledge and experience in the development of geospatial database structures, geography, computer science and programming, and geographic information systems including software/coding for preparing, managing, hosting, and publishing large or complex geospatial data geospatial data; knowledge and use of geospatial standards and metadata;  comprehensive knowledge of GIS (Geographic Information Systems), image processing, graphic editing, database, and standard office applications, and familiar with the use of the ESRI/GIS application suite of desktop and online platforms. Geospatial Analysis, Techniques and Projects: Knowledge of and experience with geospatial analytical methods techniques and tools, in order to analyze and draw conclusions for national level data, programs and issues; demonstrated experience with geospatial project planning, project research and/or project management. Communication, Collaboration and Relationship Building: Knowledge and experience in communicating ideas, concepts, methods, analyses, evaluations and recommendations in a lucid, logical and convincing manner, either by oral or written means of communication to a variety of audiences including management, professional, technical, and administrative at all organization and hierarchical levels with equal facility and clarity;  experience working, collaborating and building relationship with other geospatial professionals. Education

Degree: geography; or related physical or social science such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields.

OR

Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in geography, or a related field that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields, as shown in section above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
