This notice is issued under direct-hire authority to recruit new talent to occupations for which NIST has a severe shortage of candidates.
Duties
- Contribute to the research and development of the optical networking of superconducting quantum computers with quantum transduction devices.
- Take responsibility for designing, constructing, and verifying an opto-electro-mechanical coupling system for a cryogenic environment.
- Operate and maintain a helium battery dilution refrigerator system.
- Align and operate a quantum transduction device at cryogenic temperatures.
- Measure the optical and microwave response of a quantum transducer.
- Measure quantum states with homodyne tomography.
- Perform covariance measurements of two-mode quantum resources.
- Collaborate with team members and disseminate research results through publications, presentations, and meetings with key staff, collaborators, and external stakeholders.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
A. Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics.
Or
B. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience
or additional education.
In either A or B above, the courses must have included a fundamental course in general physics and, in addition, courses in any two of the following: electricity
and magnetism, heat, light, mechanics, modern physics, and sound.
And
In addition to the above basic requirements, applicants must possess one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level (ZP-II at NIST.
Specialized experience is defined as:
- Experience with test equipment to perform precision optical and electrical measurements.
- Operational knowledge of lasers and optoelectronic devices.
- design and simulation of classical optical systems.
- Experience with quantum information theory and quantum networking protocols.
- Experience with instrument control and data analysis performed with a modern programming language.
