This notice is issued under direct-hire authority to recruit new talent to occupations for which NIST has a severe shortage of candidates.
Duties
- Serve as Group Leader of the Fiber Sources and Applications Group. Oversee the planning, direction, and execution of projects; develop short- and long- term goals and objectives; provide technical leadership and supervisory functions; guide the work of others.
- Develop innovative, near IR region dual-combs for applications in spectroscopy and optical time-transfer, including Greenhouse gas and air quality measurements, Agriculture measurements, and precision timing at the quantum limit.
- Conduct pioneering research on nonlinear optical properties, supercontinuum generation, and optical frequency comb generation.
- Supervise staff including defining work objectives and project plans; providing feedback; and evaluating performance.
- Furthers the diversity of the workforce to incorporate a broad representation of qualified staff, and relevant approaches and ideas.
- Ensures a positive, supportive, and safe work climate.
- Aligns work with the higher-level scope/objectives of the Operating Unit.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
A. Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics.
Or
B. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience
or additional education.
In either A or B above, the courses must have included a fundamental course in general physics and, in addition, courses in any two of the following: electricity
and magnetism, heat, light, mechanics, modern physics, and sound.
And
In addition to the above basic requirements, applicants must possess one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 level (ZP-II at NIST.
Specialized experience is defined as:
- Experience in design, construction, & characterization of stable optical frequency combs and novel ultrashort pulsed lasers in the near IR region, supercontinuum generation in optical fiber, optical frequency measurement.
- Comprehensive knowledge of optical physics and associated experimental methods, including laser frequency control, laser spectroscopy, and nonlinear optics.
- Experience leading diverse teams, supervising staff, and developing staffs' skills.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done. We will credit all qualifying volunteer experience in your application.
