This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, U. S. Coast Guard, Operational Logistics, Base Saint Louis, Industrial Production Facility, Saint Louis Mo. 

Duties

The selectee will serve as a Carpenter responsible for performing a variety of work in the construction, altering and repairing of building structures, fittings, panels, partitions and other wood or wood substitute articles; making repairs to damaged plastic boat hulls by preparing/applying fiberglass patches to restore original contour and strength; and planning and completing projects from initial layout to final assemble or installation.Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team.  Typical work assignments include:- Building, repairing, altering, treating, laying out and/or erecting a wide variety of structural items.- Assembling items with a variety of joining techniques.- Setting up/adjusting and using stationary power equipment and the full range of industrial woodworking and related machinery to accomplish more difficult tasks.- Building concrete forms with proper reinforcement steel material as required.- Applying and making fiberglass repairs to small boats.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • The position requires a valid state driver's license.
  • Applicant is required to meet the physical requirements of the position.
  • A one-year probationary period may be required.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service.

Qualifications

Applicants will be evaluated on their ability to perform the duties of the position rather than the length of experience.  Eligibility will be determined by the relevance, scope, and quality of all experience and training, regardless of where or how acquired.Applicants will be rated and ranked based on their knowledge of the following job elements:* Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. (SCREEN OUT ELEMENT)* Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc.* Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)* Ability to interpret instructions, specification, etc. (includes blueprinting reading)* Measurement and Layout.* Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.* Knowledge of materials. National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
