You will serve as an ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN (MECHANICAL) in the Mechanical Shop (Code 930), Production Resources Department Manager (Code 901), Production Resources Department (Code 900) of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will evaluate field problems and requests to determine the needs for special tools, portable metal cutting/forming/grinding machines, or other special devices to facilitate productions operations. You will design and develop detailed working drawings for the manufacture of required tools/machines/devices which are not commercially available. You will provide technical direction/coordination/and control over the manufacture of tools/machines/devices, directing performance testing of the completed item. You will instruct shop operating personnel in the care and operation of special tools/machines/devices. You will act as a liaison with other engineering, technical, and administrative codes, ships’ forces, shop personnel, other government agencies, and private firms.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of Specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience applying concepts, principles, and practices of the engineering science employed in the detailed analysis of shop operations, development / design of tools / machines / devices, and the development of test / evaluation plans for tools / machines / devices. Experience developing clear and effective technical procedures and drafting skill to permit the development of accurate and effective detailed working drawings for the manufacture of complex tools / machines / devices. Experience understanding materials, equipment, and methods used in the manufacture of tools / machines / devices, as well as toolmaking practice and procedure.
