The Office of Inspector General (OIG) is an independent office whose mission is to promote excellence, integrity, and accountability throughout the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). In our dynamic environment, the OIG conducts investigations, audits, evaluations, and inspections to enhance program effectiveness and efficiency and to detect and prevent waste, fraud, and mismanagement in DHS programs and operations.

Duties

This position serves as a Visual Information Specialist specifically responsible for creating shareable infographics and data visualizations to be distributed through varied means, including print and online/social media channels; researching complex and technical statistical data from across the agency; conceiving methods of displaying that content in an aesthetically pleasing, easily understood manner that tells a compelling story using text and images; and working with strategic communications professionals to incorporate infographics into overall communications and marketing outreach. Being a Visual Information Specialist makes you a valuable member of the Office of Innovation. You will coordinate the design and development of complex, high-level multimedia products in collaboration with editors, subject matter experts, and clients. Typical assignments include: Work with customers to evaluate their mission requirements, identify the target audience, and define objectives/goals of the requested project when format or visual may not be specified. In these cases, the employee must visually interpret the subject matter to be depicted. Advises on the technical advantages and disadvantages on design matters such as the layout, design, format, style, techniques, lettering, color harmony, contrast effects, and software compatibility. Utilizes specialized computer graphics or other advanced technology combined with other materials to create interesting and appealing layouts, creating both data-driven visualizations and story-driven infographics with the ability to inform and provide graphic direction. Design, creates, and conceives visual material for which a specific format or visual style may not have been established Incorporates modern techniques and methods to present information and material to target audiences. Provides input and recommendations to the development or changes on UX policies. Plans, coordinates and establishes operating methods and procedures for accomplishment of the UX mission. Recommends appropriate visual images that simplify subject matter, appeal to users, or represent concepts, abstract ideas, or thoughts. Defines the overall goals and objectives of the user experience function or specific issues by meeting with top level managers and executives within the DHS/OIG. The incumbent establishes a system to review, control and report on user experience development status.

Qualifications

You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of this vacancy announcement. If you are a current federal employee, you must meet all time-in-grade and time-after competitive appointment qualifications by the closing date of this vacancy announcement. To make an accurate determination, you will need to include on your resume your federal position title, pay plan, occupational series, grade level, agency, dates for which you held the grade level (stated as MM/YYYY to MM/YYYY, OR MM/YYYY to PRESENT), and total hours worked per week. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). You qualify for the GS-13 grade level if you possess one year of specialized experience at the GS-12 grade level performing duties such as: -Managing assignments that require comprehensive knowledge and experience in design of website content. -Creating visual concepts using specialized computer graphics and/or digital media to communicate ideas that inspire, inform, and captivate users. Experience could be the creation of visual materials such as illustrations, displays, exhibit photographs, typography, combining texture, and photos in design solutions that appropriately convey the information, reproduce well, and have visual impact. Conveying and presenting technical information to a variety of audiences with limited to no knowledge of topic areas Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. The qualification requirements listed above must be met by the closing date 06/03/2024of this announcement. Current federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade level or equivalent grade band in the federal service. The time-in-grade requirement must be met by the closing date 06/03/2024of this announcement. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees. If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule C, Non-career SES or Presidential Appointee employee in the Executive Branch, you must disclose this information to the Human Resources Office.
