This position is with the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Office of Publications and Special Studies (OPUBSS).
This position is inside the bargaining unit.
Duties
Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
Serves as a member of the Bureau of Labor Statistics Publishing staff with responsibility for assisting in the production and coordination to develop professional-level graphics, publications, and visual material.
Assists with creative projects, demonstrating knowledge of visual arts methods and design best practices, and translating ideas and concepts into high-quality print and online products; including brand development, digital design, print promotions, and other graphic art-related projects.
Provides graphic support for all Bureau of Labor Statistics publications (e.g., Monthly Labor Review, Beyond the Numbers, Spotlight on Statistics), as well as input on planning and carrying out the visual information aspects of the publishing office.
Assists with the development and production of designs, as well as consult with subject matter experts to and provide visual materials for the Bureau of Labor Statistics public website, a range of presentations formats, and various internal communication channels.
Collaborates with coworkers and project team members to create and produce original digital design materials, such as videos, social media marketing, motion graphics, charts, maps, and other visual information.
Assists with the evaluation of new products, technology, and methodologies for improvement to capabilities and services for the graphics and printing section, as well as informing the staff and others how new technology can benefit the publishing processes at the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Requirements

- Candidate required to obtain the necessary security/investigation level.
- Requires a supervisory probationary period if the requirement has not been met.
Qualifications
You must meet the (1) Basic Requirements AND the (2) Minimum Qualifications to qualify for Visual Information Specialist.
Basic Requirements: Visual Information Specialist, GS-1084:
Education - Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study -- commercial art, fine arts, art history, industrial design, architecture, drafting, interior design, photography, visual communication, or other fields related to the position.
OR
Experience - Specialized Experience in the actual type of work for which application is made. Unpaid experience is creditable, provided the work done was of a quality level and demonstrated the ability required for the position. This includes planning the preparation and use of photographs, illustrations, drawings, and other art work, charts, diagrams, dioramas, maps, slides, overlays, and other kinds of visual material for use in communicating information through visual means.

Minimum Qualifications: Visual Information Specialist, GS-1084:
Specialized Experience is the experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform the duties of the position successfully, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level.
GS-07: Applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level GS-05 in the Federal Service. Qualifying specialized experience includes:
Applied knowledge of a variety of computer graphic, drawing, presentation and other software to plan, design, and create visual projects;
Provided basic digital design/visual information services to customers.
GS-09: Applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level GS-07 in the Federal Service. Qualifying specialized experience includes:
Produced digital products or materials using various computer software and devices;
Provided intermediate digital design/visual information services to customers.
OR
Education Substitution:
GS-07: 1 year of graduate-level education or
Superior Academic Achievement is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average, or (3) honor society membership.
1) Class standing -- Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses.
2) Grade-point average (G.P.A.) -- Applicants must have a grade-point average of: 2.95 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or 3.45 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.
3) Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society. A list of acceptable honor societies can be found at https://www.achshonor.org/.
GS-09: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree orLL.B. or J.D., if related.
OR
Combination of Education and Specialized Experience:
GS-07: Graduate education (less than one year) and specialized experience as required for GS-07 (less than one year) that when combined totals one year.
GS-09: Graduate education (more than one year but less than two) and specialized experience as required for GS-09 (less than one year) that when combined totals one year. Only graduate education beyond the first year (18 semester hours or quarter hour equivalent) can be combined with experience to total one year.
