About the Position: The Watervliet Arsenal is an Army owned and operated manufacturing center located in NY. It is the oldest, continuously active arsenal in the United States having begun operations in 1813. Today it is relied upon by U.S. and foreign militaries to produce the most advanced, high-powered weaponry for cannon systems.

Duties

Manufactures complex and non-routine parts and complete items of equipment from raw stock of different kinds of metals and metal alloys and other materials including rare metals, new metal alloy or plastics and lightweight metals. Performs work involved in the manufacture of items from castings, forgings, weldments, and other fabrication through the use of machine tools. Studies single, sets and series of blueprints, drawings and sketches featuring orthographic and isometric projections of items to be worked. Set up and operate machine tools such as lathes, vertical and horizontal boring mills, bench, plain or universal milling machines, slotters, planers, grinders, radial drills, jig borers and gear generators. Perform precision handiwork to finish, fit and assemble machined parts. Use various bench mounted and handheld powered and non-powered tools such as files, drills, reamers, and buffers. Performs heat treating, soldering and welding. Performs manufacturing work requiring extensive knowledge of machine tool components such as bearings, gears, races, and shafts in order to repair, modify or manufacture machine tool parts and fixtures.

  • This position may require shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
  • Due to the nature of this position, employees may be required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Machinist without more than normal supervision which includes the ability to: (1) Manufacturing complex or non-routine parts and items of equipment from raw stock of different metals or metal alloys; (2) Performing machining operations, setting up and/or operating a variety of machine tools, such as Computerized Numerical Control (CNC) machines, lathes, milling machines, drill presses, and grinders; (3) Using trade methods and/or techniques on conventional, specialized and/or numerical/computer numerically controlled machine tools; and (4) Utilize tooling required to produce the features, tolerances and surface finishes to specifications. To meet the basic eligibility, you must receive at least two points on the screen-out element indicated above and must have an average of two points on all the job elements listed below. Your application will be further evaluated to determine if you meet the best qualified cut-off for referral to the selecting official. Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal SupervisionAbility To Use Shop DrawingsKnowledge of MetalsOperation of Machine Tools Physical Effort: Requires standing, stooping, bending and reaching. Required to lift/carry items weighing up to 44 lbs. Mechanical lifting devices/other employees are available to assist with lifts of 45 lbs. and over. Working Conditions: Works in a well lighted, heated, and ventilated shop with concrete floors. Exposed to dust from grinding, oil from machines, dirt, heat, noise, and fumes. Subject to the hazards of burns from hot metal chips, dust in lungs, cuts, bruises, and injuries to the hands from the use of machine and hand tools, skin irritation from contact with coolants, lubricants, and abrasive compounds, and subject to strains from infrequent moving, lifting, and handling of heavy items. Wears safety glasses, shoes, and other safety apparel and equipment as required.
