Duties

Develops, implements, and maintains ongoing programs, projects, and initiatives to promote a safe and healthy work environment for NIH employees, patients, visitors, and guest workers. Performs investigations and interviews to follow up on incidents involving personal injury, illness, or property damage, providing analysis and feedback on prevention of future occurrences. Uses scientific knowledge to review data collected during investigations and provides quarterly/yearly analysis of trends. Proposes action items for prevention based on scientific analysis. Uses scientific knowledge to instruct management officials, program and technical staff, and scientists on a variety of occupational safety and health programs and subjects in a biomedical and research setting. Participates in the development and implementation of training programs designed to increase awareness of safety hazards, enhance the understanding of preventative measures, and promote safe and healthful practices.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a Health Sciences Safety Specialist, GS-0601, position you must have successfully completed a full 4 year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree or graduate/higher level degree with major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. (This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained). In addition, in order to qualify for a Health Sciences Safety Specialist, 0601 at the GS-09 level, you must have: A. completed 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or, have a master's or equivalent graduate degree in a related field; OR B. at least 1 year of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: working with safety and occupational health staff in the implementation and maintenance of ongoing biomedical research programs, projects and initiatives to promote a safe and healthy work environment; assisting in the identification of potential safety-related problems and hazards in clinical or research laboratories; providing input into guidance and recommendations for the control of risks associated with the conduct of biomedical research and support functions. OR C. a combination of post baccalaureate education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position. In addition, to qualify for a Health Sciences Safety Specialist GS-0601 position at the GS-11 level, you must have: A. completed 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or, have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a related field; OR B. at least 1 year of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the Federal Government obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: advising scientists and investigators working with hazardous agents or chemicals on proper safety requirements; developing training programs designed to increase awareness of safety hazards, enhance the understanding of preventive measures, and promoting safe and healthful practices in biomedical research or clinical environments; conducting risk assessments and ensuring compliance with appropriate safety standards and guidelines in biomedical research facilities; and developing solutions to reduce or eliminate recurrence of safety hazards and causal factors associated with the conduct of biomedical research and support functions. OR C. a combination of graduate education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.
