You will serve as a Sheet Metal Mechanic (Aircraft) Leader in the Production Lines Division (second shift), MRO Production Department of FLEET READINESS CENTER SOUTHWEST.
This announcement uses the Certain Personnel of the DoD direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
Duties
You will lead apprentices, trainees, journeymen, workers, military personnel and others in the proper use of tools, machinery, and repair procedures associated with the aircraft sheet metal.
You will conduct training sessions designed to update, improve, and upgrade the knowledge and skills of others by selecting, modifying, and using various instructional methods and techniques.
You will lead in the use of layout techniques, power tools, materials, measuring devices, precision instruments, and safety devices.
You will evaluate the progress of workers in terms such as factors of interest, cooperation, assimilation of basic fundamentals and theory, and practical application of work methods.
Requirements
- Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.

- You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
- Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
- This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
- Physical exertion requires heavy lifting and carrying of objects up to 45 pounds. Any weight to be lifted in excess of 40 pounds will not be attempted unaided.
- This position requires near vision correctable at 14" to Jaeger 2 and far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other. Must be able to distinguish colors and have depth perception.
- Incumbent may occasionally be required to use toxic chemicals and/or work in presence of toxic fumes, requiring the use of appropriate breathing apparatus.
Qualifications
Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
