The incumbent is a senior level Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist that consults on the lifecycle management of medical technology(s) nationally within VHA. The incumbent is a national expert for Tele Technology and serves as a liaison between the VHA Office of Healthcare Technology Management and Biomedical Engineering staff at VHA, VISN, and facility levels.
Duties
Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist (National) - Tele Technology GS-1601-13 Major duties:
Lifecycle management
Provides input on medical technology to the national VHA Healthcare Technology
Management Program Office on Tele Technology;
Monitors emerging biomedical technology and trends;
Facilitates strategic equipment planning at a national level;
Initiates and participates in technology assessment and product evaluations;
Facilities Engineering, Patient Safety, Logistics, Contracting, NAC, and equipment manufacturers on procurement related or technical issues;
Provides education and cross-training, sets up training programs on supporting and maintaining Tele Technology, network issues, certification;
Coordinates national rollout of technology updates/upgrades and implementation of new systems; and
Manages national equipment inventory database on Tele Technologies and other medical systems, in order to make decisions and respond to identified issues.
Policy and Administrative
Reviews and drafts national policies and procedures for VHA-wide implementation and maintenance as related to the Tele Technology;
Provides education and creates local, regional, and national training programs for Tele Technology;
Establishes and shares best practices for maintaining and managing medical technology; Investigates and advises on medical device and information security issues at a national level;
Provides support of Alert & Recall Management System (ARMS) and patient safety on a national level, consulting with the HTM Program Office and NCPS;
Provides guidance to VHA facilities on applicable regulatory requirements, codes and standards as they apply to the safety, operation, and management of Tele Critical Care and other technology;
Serves as VA BESS liaison to equipment manufacturers for Tele Technologies at a national level.
Technical Support
Provides maintenance and technology management guidance nationally across VHA both remotely and on-site;
Serves as national expert on Tele Technology and related technologies and provides consultation on medical technology systems that span across multiple regions in the VHA organization;
Provides expert guidance and hands-on support for Tele Technology including preventive and corrective maintenance; shares troubleshooting tips, training, and best practices;
Other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM Monday - Friday

This recruitment is for one position with the VHA Healthcare Technology Management (HTM) Program Office located in Washington D.C. This is not a remote position.

United States Citizenship: United States Citizen
English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Experience and Education:
1. Associates degree in Biomedical Electronics Technology, Biomedical Equipment Technology or Biomedical Engineering Technology or in a related technical field such as Electronic Technology or Information Technology and two years of experience as a Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist, Biomedical Equipment Technician, Field Service Engineer, Medical Equipment Repairer, or Information Technology Specialist.
OR
2. Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering Technology or in a related field such as Electronics Engineering Technology (EET) or Information Technology.
OR
3. Completion of a military training program in biomedical equipment and two years of experience as a Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist or Biomedical Equipment Technician, Field Service Engineer, Medical Equipment Repairer or Information Technology Specialist.
Licensure/Certification/Registration: None
Grade Determinations - Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist (National) GS-13:
Experience: At least one year of experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level. Certification as a Project Manager highly desired but not required.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: In addition to the experience above, the Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist (National) GS-13 must demonstrate all of the following KSAs:
Ability to recommend and review policies and/or directives regarding medical technology.
Ability to effectively communicate and coordinate work across multiple settings, e.g. medical centers, VISNs, VACO.
Knowledge of the codes and standards of VA, TJC, NFPA, AAMI, FDA, and AHA as they apply to the safety and operation of medical instrumentation.
Knowledge related to the characteristics, capabilities, installation, and configuration of medical equipment and their associated networks.
Ability to analyze national and VISN-level technical issues and develop timely and economical solutions.
