About the Position: The primary purpose of this position is to serves as a fully trained member of a firefighting crew when engaged in the protection of life and property. Management may select at any grade levels announced.

Duties
Participate as a firefighter member to control and extinguish fires.
Assist in the performance of fire prevention inspections to identify potential fire hazards.
Respond as a member of a firefighting crew to all types of fires and emergencies.
Drive and operate firefighting vehicles to reported incidents.
Operate a variety of highly technical firefighting equipment to extinguish fires.
Respond to on-site accidents and other emergencies involving injuries and illnesses.
Determine the seriousness of a patient's condition by conducting a complete examination and utilize emergency medicine techniques to stabilize patients for transport to health care facilities.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Subject to periodic (e.g. annual) medical examinations following appointment to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- This position is covered by the Civilian Drug Abuse Testing Program. Incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 5019-R, "Condition of employment for certain civilian positions identified as critical under the Drug Abuse testing Program,"
- This position is designated as essential during inclement weather, fire, hazardous duty, and other emergency operations.
- This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis; 48-hour rotating shifts with a work schedule of 144 hours per pay period.
- A current, valid state drivers license and Government license is mandatory for this position.
- Incumbent must possess and maintain EMT-Basic certification (or higher) from the State of Kansas or National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians.
- Assists in training other firefighters in the skills of driving and operating the equipment.
- Participation in daily physical fitness program while in duty is mandatory
- TDY travel is occasionally required.
- Shift work is required; 48 hr on duty, 72 hr off duty. 72 hrs per week, 144 hrs per pay period.

In order to qualify, you must meet the requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. GS-04 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes (1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; AND (2) Rescue operations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-03).
OR
Education: Two years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Science, or other related fields of study.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentages.
GS-05 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes (1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) Rescue operations; (3) Detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; AND (4) Operation of fire communications equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).
OR
Education: Four years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Science, Fire Training, or other related fields of study.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 120. Add the two percentages.
GS-06 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes (1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) Rescue operations; (3) Detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) Operation of fire communications equipment; AND (5) Controlling hazardous materials incidents. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
Education GS-06: Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job at the GS-06 level, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
GS-07 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes (1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) Rescue operations; (3) Detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) Operation of fire communications equipment; (5) Controlling hazardous materials incidents; AND (6) Developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
Education GS-07: Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job at the GS- 7 level, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
Certification Requirements:
GS-0081-04 Firefighter: Must obtain and maintain the following Department of Defense (or reciprocal equivalent) Certificates within 12 months of employment: Hazardous Material Awareness; Hazardous Material Operations; Firefighter I; Firefighter II.
GS-0081-05 Firefighter: Must possess and maintain the following Department of Defense (or reciprocal equivalent) Certifications: Hazardous Materials Awareness; Hazardous Materials Operations; Firefighter I; Firefighter II. WITHIN 12 MONTHS of assignment, must obtain Driver/Operator Pumper and Driver/Operator Mobile Water Supply.
GS-0081-06 Firefighter: Must possess and maintain the following Department of Defense (or reciprocal equivalent) Certifications: Hazardous Materials Awareness; Hazardous Materials Operations; Firefighter I; Firefighter II; Driver Operator - Pumper; Driver-Operator Mobile Water Supply. WITHIN 12 MONTHS of assignment, must obtain Hazardous Materials Technician and EMT-Basic certification.
GS-0081-07 Firefighter: Must possess and maintain the following Department of Defense (or reciprocal equivalent) Certifications: Firefighter I and Firefighter II; Driver/Operator Pumper; Hazardous Materials Awareness; Hazardous Materials Operations; Hazardous Materials Technician; Driver/Operator Mobile Water Supply; EMT-Basic certification (or higher) from the State of Kansas or National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. WITHIN 12 MONTHS of assignment must obtain Driver/Operator Aircraft Rescue Firefighter and Airport Firefighter.
