Duties
This is being announced at multiple grade levels; duties listed below will be performed in a developmental capacity. At the full performance, GS-07, the incumbent will:
Respond to all fire emergencies to include those involving radioactive and/or hazardous materials, medical emergencies, rescue operations, wild land fires, hazardous material incidents and aircraft emergencies.
Use firefighting equipment to include hoses, ladders, hydrants, firefighting vehicles, etc. to control the incident.
Respond to emergencies which may include hazardous material.
Analyze the hazardous incident and determine the magnitude of the problem.
Serve as a first responder to medical emergencies and perform medical procedures that are noninvasive.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires that the incumbent work up to 72 hours per week (144 hours per pay period) which includes at least one 24-hour shift and may include working nights, weekends, and holidays.
- This is a drug testing designated position (TDP) under the Department of the Army Drug-Free Federal Workplace Program. Must sign DA Form 5019 acknowledging both pre-appointment and periodic random drug testing requirements.
- Must be able to pass pre-appointment and subsequent periodic medical examinations IAW DoD 6055.05M to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
- Must successfully complete an annual Job Performance Test.
- Must participate in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid State's drivers license.
- Must be able obtain and maintain an Emergency Vehicle Operator's Certification.
- Must complete an annual emergency vehicle operator's course.
- Must maintain a functioning telephone to aid in contact during recall/emergency situations.
- Position designated Mission Essential, required to report for duty during inclement weather, natural disasters, and other emergency situations.
- Must wear a a uniform and safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Must be able to lift heavy objects of 50 pounds.
- GS-0081 is a primary/rigorous position a pre-employment physical is required; you must successfully complete the pre-employment physical prior to being placed into this position.

Specialized Experience for GS-4 level: One year of specialized experience which includes: (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; AND (3) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-03).
OR
Education: Two years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Science, or other related fields of study.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentages.
To qualify at the GS-05 grade level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer or governmental fire department or brigade; responding to basic hazardous incidents; and participating in firefighting and rescue operations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).
OR
Education: Four years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Science, Fire Training, or other related fields of study.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 120. Add the two percentages.
To qualify at the GS-06 grade level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; performing rescue operations and detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
To qualify at the GS-07 grade level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade in very difficult and dangerous situations such as brush, forest, and structural fires, hazardous material spills, controlling hazardous materials incidents; providing training in fire protection and prevention. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
