Duties
Conduct facility fire risk surveys and public education campaigns when necessary.
Assume operational control at emergency incidents directing firefighting crews until relieved by the fire chief.
Direct operational activities for fire station(s) including care and maintenance of equipment and facilities.
Issue permits for hot work and inspects sites for fire safety compliance measures.
Review plans for construction and building modifications to assure compliance with DoD, Army and National Building Fire Codes.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Must comply with Drug Abuse Testing Program requirements.
- Must be able to pass pre-appointment and subsequent periodic medical examinations IAW DoD 6055.5M to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
- Incumbent must successfully complete an annual Job Performance Test.
- Incumbent must participate in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
- Incumbent required to drive a motor vehicle. A valid state and government driver's license is required.
- Incumbent must wear uniform and safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Position is designated as Mission Essential.
- One-year supervisory probationary period may be required.
- Must be able to lift heavy objects of 50 pounds.
- Incumbent required to work a minimum of 72 hours per week (144 hours per pay period) which includes at least one 24-hour shift and may include working nights, weekends, and holidays.

Specialized Experience for Current Federal Employees: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Training personnel in topics such as operation of firefighting equipment, type and proper use of firefighting agents, use and types of alarm equipment, maintenance of fixed and portable extinguishing equipment, rescue equipment and techniques, hazardous material control, and emergency medical treatment; 2) Conducting periodic/special inspections of buildings, shops or other facilities; and 3) responding to accidents or other emergencies involving injuries/illnesses. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).
